Hello beings of great knowledge! First, I want to apologize if I am repeating a question or several, I have read a lot of threads to try and solve my issue and have in the process found myself confused about the definitions of different file types and their "playability" in different situations. This will be a multi question one, so bare with me. First, a rundown of my problem. I have a regular DVD purchased in the US, which are NTSC and Region 1. This is a Christmas present for a friend in Sweden (PAL and REGION 2) I figured that there must be some way that I would be able to make a working DVD that can be played in the Swedish DVD player, or at least on the Computer using Windows media player , Real player etc. If worst come to worst I will even do with 2 VCD’s to make it work. One part that I am confused about is the MPEG2 and AVI format. I have used “Womble multimedia MPEG wizard" and converted the VOB files from the DVD (that I first ran through DVD decrypter) into a MPEG2 format file. Is this file by itself a file that can be played on any computer (lets say Windows media player) no matter where in the world it is? I know that if I burn it to be a regular DVD it will be problems unless I manage to convert it to PAL, but the file itself on the computer- does it work on any Computer? And what is the difference for AVI? - does it work the same way? Aside from the answer on that question, what should be my next step if I want to try to get this file on a DVD that will be playable on a PAL DVD player? Can I use Womble multimedia MPEG wizard to change the settings to PAL? (25 FPS etc) and if so, how should my settings be changed? My files properties at this time: VIDEO: Size: 720 x 480 (3 / 4) Frame rate: 29.97 Frames/Sec Bit rate: 9800 kbps (Variable) AUDIO: Format: Linear PCM Channel: Stereo Bit Rate: 1536 kbps Sample Rate: 48 kHz I do not really care about menus etc (and I merged it all together in the MPEG2 file) I need it to be synced though (it is a recording of a live performance of a band. I have DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink , Blaze Media Pro (Evaluation edition) and would download anything that can help me out. Any suggestions or tip Thank you in advance Mats
hi mattsen77 : welcome to AD. I think the simplest thing for you to do is download shrinkdvd. After you put your disc in the drive, open shrink and select full disc backup. After the encoding period where it will analyse your disc it will come to this screen. if you select the next tab this screen will open up.Here just make the disc region free or what ever zone you want it to be. This should solve the issue for you hopefully Then continue on with burning your disc. See how you go
Thank you Andmerr! That was a fast reply, and you made it quite simple. Almost sounds too simple. First I was confused because you said ShrinkDVD- and it has been named like that a little all over this forum, but when I looked at DVDShrink I realize that this is the program you are referring to, and I have this on my pc and used it before for my own DVD’s. So what you are saying is that choosing the Region free option will solve both the region problem AND the NTSC/PAL issue? I guess region free means region free so it sounds like it should work however there are TONS of threads out there that deals with this issue and I have never seen it this simple. But hey, I will give it a shot, I have a region free DVD player myself, so I might be able to see what the Properties are ion the DVD when I put it in there.
hi i think vobblanker can change the pal to ntsc, but dont quote me... i think you will need to do this as region free on its own wont do.. as a region free ntsc on a pal system plays black and white, not sure what a pal on an ntsc system would do? but most players these days play both i have found with no intervention needed...
there more common these days, and i havent seen a straight pal or ntsc version in a few years but surmise that they still exist.Try it and see and if it doesnt work you can always rip the dvd to an avi, and use something like cucusofts avi2mpeg converter which will utilise a hybrid version of pal/ntsc for you. Alternatively i suggest you try rotary's solution n1st as it will be the more probable course of action for you.
Thank you guys for your expertise I used the DVD shrink with the region free setting, so when I send it to Sweden I will find out if it works. Now, I used VOB Blanker- uploaded the file- checked the PAL boxes on the files and I ended up with some files that looks just like the ones I had in the input and it plays fine on my computer. I do not think it converted to PAL because when I look at the file Properties in "Wobble" all the settings looks the same as in my earlier post. Frame rate etc is exactly the same What specifically should I do in the VOB blanker as far as settings to make it work? NTSC-PAL(if it truly CAN change to PAL) As I mentioned before I have a MPEG2 file of my DVD file as well, anything that I can do with this file instead to make it work?. And if making an AVI- is this region/video system - free? (As was my original question)
Alternatively an one-pass application is DivXtoDVD. Open the *.VOB series and select force to PAL encoding.
hi now if i had an mpeg in ntsc or pal i would use mainconcept encoder to make it the other type !!! then load to tmpgenc dvd author to make vob/ifo/bup (dvd)
Ok, just to put my two cents in here... I live in the UK which is also region 2 PAL... I have played NTSC region 1 dvds for years with no problem on my dvd players and TV... I think the only thing that would stop your friend from playing the disc would be the region settings if she hasn't got a multi-region dvd player, so I'd have thought that just making it region free would be enough. Also, get the name and model of your friends dvd player, there must be a region hack for it somewhere. By the way, all my converted to region free movies from region 1 play fine in my PAL ps2, which doesn't have region free on it..so it should play ok on a PAL dvd player too. Hope that helped you maybe?
Paddymail: Thank you for your input. Yes it seems most new DVD players handle it, so hopefully the DVD shrink copy I made region free will play there. Rotary: So the program is called "Main concept encoder" and " TMPGEnc " ? Ok, I am trying to cover all ends, so I will try that also Oracle: Ok, forcing to PAL conversion with DivXtoDVD , cool _ I'll try that as well, have you had success with that.. All this sounds so simple haha , but the more solutions- the better!
hi tmpgenc dvd author (be careful) there are at least 3 types of program starting with TMPGENC ! also i treid doing vobs (dvd files) in divxtodvd on the free version it made my 4 gig film 10gig ???
Hey Rotary i'm with you on this one, me too, took it out to 9+g. I tried something else and it worked but cannot understand the big blow out!
I noticed that Mainconcept encoder ads a watermark and its says that it has a video capture recording restriction of five minutes. The watermark, is this going to be something that is seen on the final output file.. and the 5 miunte restriction- does that apply to what I am trying to do? (convert it to PAL from NTSC) and the TMPGEnc - is this the one? and do you know if it will add any markings on the output etc..? http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Images-Utils/TMPGEnc-DVD-Author.shtml
Trying to PAL to NTSC. When I put the disk in my dvd player it says incorrect disk. Its in PAL. Open Vobblanker. Added file. Listed 3 in title set. The first one you cannot click on video att. The second and third I changed PAL to NTSC. Then I clicked on process. 5 minutes lated done. I took it off of with Nero. I put in dvd player. Plays Warner Brothers intro. Then says incorrect disc. Tried again. This time I hit stop twice while it was playing intro. Then hit play. Plays the video part off dvd. Press dvd menu button, then its incorrect disc. Use Vobblanker again. This time I clicked skip for the first one. (No video att..) Took off with Nero. Put in dvd player. Same thing. ANy ideas to convert everything and still play in dvd player with menu?
see if you get the same problem if you are running the trial version of slysofts anydvd in the background.
Good idea. I'll try that but I forgot to mention that these discs are not copy-righted. I usually use dvd43 except for some these new movies. Then anyvd. Like I said though, these are copyrighted. Ill try thou. Let you know how it turns out.
