Nero 7 nero.exe startup error

I have used Nero for years and have been fortunate to have had very few problems. My current PC has had no other CD/DVD burn program but Nero. I recently uninstalled Nero 6.6 (which was working fine) and installed a retail copy of Nero 7 (because I liked some of the new features). "Nero Smart Start" opens fine and all features work, including those using Nero Express. However, if I use "Nero Burning ROM" or go directly to any burning task that opens "nero.exe" I get the following error:

"nero.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

Restarting the program yields the same result. I have run the "repair function" under "Nero ProductSetup" with no joy. I have verified that there is no "virus"/trojan that's hijacked the nero.exe file. I have uninstalled Nero 7 and gotten rid of all registry entries and cleaned, defragged, and then reinstalled Nero 7. Same result. Also, I should add that this error did not occur on the first use on either occasion, but did begin during the same session.

Nero customer service has not provided me anything useful. I have researched the net and found that a few others have experienced this error. Any suggestions or solutions? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

PC is 2.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 with 1 Gig RAM and Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4

I've had the same problem. But I originally got the error message that Oleth32.dll was either out of date or missing. But now I just get the splash screen before it shuts down.

I just filled out a form with tech support but have not reveived a response yet.

I haven't used it a lot yet, but it interfaces with Shrink fine. I've made a couple of DVDs from xVid files and they came out great. I like how it now supports 5.1 DD whereas it only supported 2.0 before.

I just wish Express allowed me to pit in the Video_TS folder and a DVD_Rom folder too. But for that I need to go into Burning Rom which doesn't start. I wonder if I should just re-install that particular component?

    Any ideas?

OK--after all the frustration, I decided to download the Nero 7 update. I was confused by the fact that this "update" appeared to be simply a "demo" program and not in fact a Nero 7 update. Well, I downloaded it and applied this update (identified as "Nero-7.0.1.4_eng.exe") and although it executed like a new install program, I placed it in the same location as my retail Nero 7, rebooted after installation, and now all is fine. I've used Nero Burning ROM several times with success and rebooted my PC and tried it again; there is joy in my computer room! I will let you know if this reappears, but it appears to be a "bug" in the off the shelf version of Nero 7 that I have. Let me say again that when you download this Nero 7 update you will think it's the demo program, but it picked up my key and all seems well. Oh yes, I'm able to successfully burn at higher speeds using the same media as I used with Nero 6.x; could be coincidence, but I think not.

I Just thought I would respond and say I have had the same exact problem. I have researched and done the same exact thing that you have done. I am going to try and re-install with the trial also and see how it turns out for me.

Note that on my final action that I did NOT uninstall my retail Nero 7 when I downloaded and executed the Nero 7 update. And, it seems to have solved my problem. Good luck with yours! --jgd

I did the same as you; I installed the trial in the same spot as the orginal. I am now having some problems with Nero Showtime, that I didn't have before ,It keeps freezing. I have yet to burn anything with the ROM, but at least when I open it, it does not immediately go into the error program. I can see I am still having a few bugs, but I am still trying diffrent things to see which ones they are.

    RedWind,

I had not executed Nero Showtime so I just did and it works fine. Again, good luck with yours.
