Purchased the burner in 2003, when the computer was built. It has only been used about 10 times with one or two successes. I recently installed Nero Smart Start, which enables logs of the process to be recorded, which I have done. So far no success burning "data"--several letters. My reading of the logs tells me nothing, but I am not at all well versed in this. Maybe I can share the log? (Liteon CD ROM LTN5260, Lite-on LTR- 52246S.)

yup, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

    ====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======

When burns are attempted, they all end up needing to be aborted. The burn always or nearly always goes to 57% and no further. There is no sign of a burn on the CD. Once aborted the computer is blocked from all other activity until (I cannot open new processes or windows) ??the abort is accepted and processed?? (this process of aborting takes several minutes) This includes the Task Manager—ie once I have aborted and the abort is shown on the computer screen Nero Window-I cannot end the Task/process.

    - Nero's too old, latest 6.x version is 6.6.0.18, download "update package 1" from here - http://ww2.nero.com/enu/nero-up.php

    - burner's firmware is up to date, albeit @Apr 2004

    - smilies are all well and good but where's the numbers

    - if other suggestions don't help try better discs

    - see previous comment

    - Here's a v good start re Power Calibration errors - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/93406

    also, quote from "http://www.nero.com/en/FAQs_Error_Messages.html#9 - "

"9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

    Please try the following solutions:

Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
    [bold]Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.[/bold]
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service."

    - if other suggestions don't help try better discs

    - InCD is Nero's horrid 'packet writing software', uninstall Nero then uninstall completely via Nero's Clean Tools, then install Nero 6.6.0.18 WITHOUT installing InCD.

It almost would seem easier and less time consuming to just buy another CD-RW drive. They are dirt cheap. Also an upgrade to DVD-RW is an option. Creaky gave you top-notch info. But at least with a new drive everything would be updated. And buy good media!

You speak of updating the firmware; Is my mfg. LITEON?
Also this is inside the CPU or internal? You think that it may be sharing power with some other component and should be powered independently. Anyway you can diagram the wires and where to reconnect them, or the grey tape if that is the power medium?
I have tried to record using several brands of CD's.
