I have had my burner since September, and I have yet to burn a backup dvd. My burner works great with burning downloads. I rip with dvd shrink and dvd decrypter. This burner's firmware is up to 0046 http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=775 The other one looks up to date. Try the firmware update, cant see anything else that could be giving you problems. The media looked good. And the burn failed on the drive with the updated firmware.

You are writing to close to the edge, try to write no further than 4300MB. And try burning at 4x. Also try diff. disc. Taiyo Yuden to Verbatim, Verbs are on sale at best buy, 15 bucks for 50 pack. Sony, fuji and maxell are fine so long as they are made in Japan.
