Hi, I have a Plextor PX-716A DVD burner and have been using it for around a year, not suddenly when i try to burn a DVD after the Lead-in the burner light stops flashing and alternates green/yellow/orange. And will not burn the DVD, sometimes if i leave it for 20 minutes or so it will finish burning the DVD but it won't work. I had a virus a while ago that might have caused this, anyone know what i should try re-installing or checking? This happens with nero and dvd decrypter, also CD-r's won't burn
Have you updated your firmware recently? Check here and see if there is an update: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces The latest version is 1.09 what's yours?
ok, I installed the 1.09 firmware, but nothing has changed . I've reinstalled all of the burning programs and nothing
Ive called Plextor and they are just telling me it's the media, which I'm sure is fine, nero is giving me an error saying power calibration error after it finishes or starts the lead-in
hi... Here's a v good start re Power Calibration errors - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/93406 also, quote from "http://www.nero.com/en/FAQs_Error_Messages.html#9 - " "9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why? Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder. Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC). This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times. If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder. Please try the following solutions: Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version. [bold]Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.[/bold] Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal. Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master. Send the recorder in for service."
Every time creaky "opens his mouth" - I learn something NEW! Imma start calling you "WOI" Wealth of Information! *S*
lmao, i'm a demon c/p ie demon copy/paster and googler, a formidable combination LOL Happy holidays all
Thank you for all the info creaky, This problem started the same time i got some nasty spyware/virus. Mcafee pretty much got rid of it except the computer seems to load slowly and the burner still doesn't work, I bought new verbatim media and updated the firmware, still no change, I'm wondering if i should reformatt the HD and start fresh or pick up a new DVD burner, should a plextor PX-716a die on me after 500-700 burns you think? also do you know a good guide for reformatting win2000?
dunno what to suggest. let's have a Nero log entry and go from there.... if its Nero 6.x - let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======" if its Nero 7.x - let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C' or similar. You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

That log is for burner a music CD. Now when I try to burn a DVD it stops after/during the lead-in and the light on the burner alternates green, amber, orange. same thing with dvd decrypter, sometimes it will actually give me an iso error saying power configuration error.
- Nero's too old, latest 6.x version is 6.6.0.18, download "update package 1" from here - http://ww2.nero.com/enu/nero-up.php - firmware's up to date - CMC make some of the worst DVD media there is, but i think their cd's are ok, at the end of the day cd burning has been around for donkey's years so you can pretty much burn decently on a wellington boot where cd's are concerned - see previous comment - for data cd's i do 24x max, for audio cd's i do 16x max - CDRALW2K.SYS is part of Roxio. try uninstalling Roxio (doesn't always play well with Nero), then you might need to fully remove using Roxio Zapper - http://www.microadvantage.net/utilities
ok I deleted roxio and used the zapper, rebooted, and still no change. I really don't think it's my media, I've always used memorex and I've actually never once had a bad disc, only about 2 times with TDK. Then once I got this spyware it did this, and I was in the middle of a spool, also Ive tried others and different brands and no change. Do you think upgrading nero will change anything? i am connected on a 28.8 dial up so it'll take me around 4 hours to DL 32 megs lol, I normally burn with DVD decrypter anyways. I'm thinking of buying a new burner but I'm sure this is caused by some virus since it began the day i got the spyware, I've ran mcafee antivirus and got rid of most of it, but when i open internet explorer it still takes me to www.needupdate.com no matter what i set my homepage too. Do you think reformatting the HD would be a ok idea?
ok, downloading Nero can keep for another day, maybe for a broadband day reformatting is always an option, but that choice is yours
creaky do you know where a good guide for reformatting is? I'm on windows 2000. also is it not too difficult to do?
