I created a main menu & a couple of chapter menus and none of them will work. When I insert the dvd (no matter where I insert it stand alone dvd player or in comp) the menu highlight is missing therefore I can't even get to the chapters menu. And to add to that the play button won't work either so I can't see the movie. Can anybody please tell me what's wrong????

Thanks for your help in advance.

You need to describe the process you used. Making a movie usually goes like this...

    Open NVE
    Select "Make DVD" > DVD-Video

    Add Video Files...

Once the files are added select Next.

This opens the "Select Menu" screen.

You can edit the menu here, NVE will add chapters where it thinks they belong. You can change layout background colors and add text here.

Once that is done, select Next.

This should bring you to the preview window. Try out your menu here to make sure it works the way you want it to.

If yours works in the Preview window, burn it to a hard drive location and see if it works.

If it works from the HDD but not on the DVD then there is some sort of burn problem or something else going on. It's hard to tell at this point.

It really sounds like you are having a file problem and we need to see what is causing this.

You should always use DVD RW dvds when doing this sort of thing. Mainly so that if something screws up you can re-use the disc.

Try making a very short "test" movie and see if you can start and stop it in the Nero preview window. if not then there is something wrong with the way you are making the menu. Nero is very forgiving in this area though. When you make your menu try not changing to many things. Make sure you can play your files with your PC's media player before burning. If they don't work on your computer then they will not work on a DVD in your player.

okay, I did all of that when I get to the preview window my menu highlight works and it will take me too the chapter menu. After that I burn to HDD and then burn to DVD-R with NERO BURNING ROM just like Alkohol's sticky says to do so when I insert DVD-R into DVD player MAin menu shows up but I can't select any thing.

Sorry im new to this DVD stuff, how do I check to see if it works from HDD, what program should I use to check and what file should click on to see if it works?

I made a log, if you think it would help to post it I will but its really F@%# long.

    Thanks for all your help

Same problem here. I was able to create perfectly working dvds with NVE, but since my last burn, yesterday, the thumbnails on the DVD menu aren't "clickable" anymore. Meaning I can view the DVD menu using both my software DVD player or the standalone but I can not highlight the thumbnails or click on them to select a chapter to view... Basically the dvds are unusable, only way to view the movies is to use the explore function in Windows and then select the .vob file to view. Funny thing is NVE used to work properly... So today I decided to uninstall Nero using the general cleaning tool and then install the latest version (7.0.1.4b). That I did but the problem remains, thumbnails can not be highlighted or clicked on :(
    Any suggestions?

    P.S.
I noticed another forum user is experiencing the same problem:

I have been having the same problem, I haven't yet burn a DVD using NV4 since (Haven't had time). But to correct the Menu problem I copied the VOB files of the Videos off the disc to my HDD, then used DVD-Lab PRO to make menu buttons and rebuild the DVD, it was a long process as I had never used DVD-Lab PRO but it was a nice learning experience. I have just yesturday updated to Nero 7.0.1.4b and hope it does a better job than 7.0.1.4 but its most likely not that much different. Then I burned the recomimpied files back to DVD using the DVD-Video setting in Nero.

I've got the same problem and it seems to only happen when I check the animate buttons and or animated menu. all the rest of the dvds I've made without animated menus or buttons worked just fine

after briefly experimenting with Roxio Easy Media Ceator 8 (the dvd authoring software being too buggy and the program crashing a lot) I installed Nero build 7.0.1.2 (never had any problems with NVE while using that -old- version). so far it seems to be working properly. thumbnails are "clickable" again. just hope I don't incur in a bunch of different bugs...

After upgrading to Nero 7.0.1.4b, I also found that Nero Vision was creating unplayable coasters. 7.0.1.2 had not had that problem.
By trial and error I found that if I uncheck "animate buttons" the DVDs are playable.
Apart from that, Nero 7 looks good - much faster DVD creation.
Hopefully they'll fix the problem soon.

Did anyone fina a solution to this problem aside from unchecking the animate buttons box? Is Nero aware of this problem? I'd like to animate the menu buttons.

I'm just adding a note saying same problem here. The animated button checkbox is not turned on by default in Nero 7. I found out only when I made a DVD with animation turned on. My first coaster in a long time. Everything worked fine once I unchecked the animation. I tried different uprgrading to the "b" version, but that didn't fix it. I tried a different animation which didn't help either. I would love to be able to use that feature.

I also reported this to Tech Support about a week ago. No response yet other than the automated thankyou. Nero 6 used to have an update about every month, so maybe soon!

have you tried just burning to disc instead of the hard drive? i had that problem, but easily fixed by just burning to dvd rather than to HD then DVD? Don't you think?

Can you explain why you think that might help?

The first thing I did was write to the DVD writer. When I found out I had a coaster, I started using Nero's ImageDrive write to create .nrg files on the HDD so that I could figure out by trial and error how to get round the problem without wasting more DVD media.

I was having the exact same problems (although i've made dozens of avi dvds with success...this one would be made without being able to click the buttons). Some of the posts in this thread talk about animation of the menu having something to do with the problem. So, I animated the buttons (they were previously not animated). That didn't fix the problem. However, I set the background from the animated setting that i originally had and made it one of the normal ones. That fixed it for me! Hope this helps.....
