AVI to DVD+/-R, but Nero 7 says too big for the disc

Hey, I've searched a few pages on the board, plus Alkohol's sticky and didn't find a solution to my question.

I'm trying to convert AVI files to a blank DVD-/+R disc, but it expands the file larger than the standard 4.7GB. I'm using Nero 7 (Make a DVD-Video program). A popup box appears and asks if I would like to decrease the quality of the file so it fits on a 4.7GB disc, I choose yes and it says it cannot be done (also asks if I'd like to use a DL disc).

My burner is the Pioneer DVR-108. I'm posting this by memory, but I'm sure the AVI file is over 700MB, but below 800MB. I'm using Imation discs, never had a problem with them.

Is there something more I need to do?

    Cheers

I dont recomend doing it all at the same time. Nero may just be getting confused because it will have to convert then recode then burn all in one pass that way. What I would do is convert in vision to the hdd at whatever size it wants. Then recode or shrink whichever you like to the hdd. Then reboot the computer and after reboot burn the folder made from recode or shrink in burning rom.

    Aerius,
whompus recommended you a good way of doing it.
But this is what I do,
In Nero I reduce it to just under 4.3Gb clicking under the custom size tab, then convert it with 2pass vbr. I write the resulting dvd to a folder on my hd instead of straight to disk. When finished then I add menues and then burn to disk. But before burning I also defrag the partition the dvd folder is on as a precaution to avoid skipping on the final dvd. One more thing, as a piece of advice, I would not recommend you using Imation disks, you might have problems with them, if not now then maybe in the future.

Thanks for the advice whoompus. I'll try this in a multistep process next time. Please excuse my n00b ignorance. Converting the file puts it on the HDD, then what does recoding/shrinking to the HDD mean? Or is this still the same thing. I assume I'm still using Nero for recoding/shrinking?

    Thanks for the option dr_no.

I use DVD Shrink for DVD copying. It's pretty easy to use and lower the quality of the file. Are you saying I can load an AVI into DVD shrink, or the recoded file after using Nero Vision on the AVI file?

I wish I were at home so I could test this out instead of asking so any questions. I can almost picture it in my head.
