hi there,
if you can find a small program called DVD region killer, it works great. try www.tucows.com or www.download.com, otherwise msg me on msn at possy_BOT@Hotmail.com

richpinks: You need to update the firmware of your drive to RPC1 (region free) and then you need to make your DVD software player region free with DVD Genie or similiar (like the one churdy mentioned).
churdy: Doesn't do the trick itself, it overrides the _software_ region checks, but the drive itself _has to_ be modified with RPC1 firmware first. And _no_ email addresses to our boards, please.

Alternative: If rewriting the firmware scares you (I killed a unit doing this incorrectly once), or the patched firmware simply doesn't exist, then you may want to try this piece of sw called DVD Region-Free:
http://www.dvdidle.com/index.htm
Apparently allows for RPC-2 drives to become 'region free' by intercepting... stuff. I've yet to try this, but it seems many have tried this with great success.

Just wanted to note that DVD Region Killer and DVDGenie don't work for WinDVD 4.0 since WinDVD 4.0 uses Windows internal region counters so it doesn't get resetted.

dRD,
Not according to the firmware updates forums at www.firmware.fr.st. WinDVDTweak can reset it, DVDGenie 4.10 still can't. WinDVD 3.x had no problems being reset but WinDVD 4.0 is stuff that both DVD Region Killer and DVDGenie authors are still trying to figure out.

Hm, interesting. I've got reviewer's edition of WinDVD4 and DVD Genie can reset the region count nicely. Maybe the retail version has something done differently, dunnoh.

Yep, since it's the forum of the site you mentioned for firmware updates....

There seems to be a newer build of WinDVD 4.0 that is out on CD copies that is newer than the 4.05.043 build available for download. It's 4.11.026 from what I've seen on the AudioVideoScience forums which fixes a lot of problems but it's not available on the net anywhere. :(
