hi there, After several days even during Xmas of trying to get my DVD writer to work I am almost at the point of dispair! Even after all the great help on these forums I am still having trouble so my last resort before I completely give up is to write here and ask for some help!

First off Id like to admit im a newbie to DVD burning, even though ive been burning CD-Rs for years nothing prepared me for the complexity of DVD-R burning! What ill do now is just quickly run through my problem and also provide a log for reference of my last burn!

My NEC ND 4550A is set as a master on the secondary IDE, the hard disk being on the primary IDE as master.

I am using Nero 7 Premium edition and have also tried using CDburner Pro XP 3. I am trying to simply burn data i.e old divx files to DVD-R for archive purposes however I cannot seem to get a disc to actually work once it has burned, firstly it shows up as if nothing is burned to the disc and secondly when I double click the DVD_R in my computer it gives an error message saying that the "Disk is not Formatted" and that the data may be corrupt!

I have gone through nearly a whole pack of Verbatim DVD-R Advance Azo discs trying different combinations, turning on DMA for both hard disk and DVD drive as well as trying to burn as ISO and then in UDF format as well as using Joliet and other combos but nothing seems to work!

My simple question really is how do I burn data on to a DVD-R with as little fuss as possible? Its driving me nuts that I cant do it! Is my drive a dud? I know one slight problem is my low RAM which i intend to upgrade very soon (i currently have only 512MB DDR) but even then with all other programmes shut and all background programmes not tasked I just dont understand why i cant get a clean burn that does not produce a coaster! I even tuned the burn down to 2X speed and also tried 4X speed but no luck! In desperation I have bought Sony DVD+R 8X and used that however the disc I used also turned out to be a coaster!

Finally and most strange of all when I used a MAxell DVD-RW the burn was successful and the files obtainable? I cant understand how and why? Please help thank you!

here is my log for latest nero burn!

PS the log below was done before I changed over to master on secondary IDE and at a higher speed I foolishly did not save the burns at lower speed but hopefully you can make sense of it? if you require a new log ill provide it! Sorry for the long post I hope someone can help!

Hi there laddyboy, Thanks for the reply.

Since that last post I went throught and actually upgraded the firmware to 1.07 and made sure the DMA was turned on for both WDC hard-disk and also the dvd-writer. I even burnt at 4X however after burning about 75% I got an error. I also turned off all background programmes running including my anti-virus etc!

This is the log! Any help would be appreciated, it would be nice to try and narrow down the problem, im working through most things I just dont see what else is left for me to do except perhaps to try some Maxell media which is DVD+R or DVD-R since the DVD-RW media works!

In scanning the burn log, I didn't see anything jump out at me. If you can successfully burn other media, I would guess the problem is that the burner and that particular media just don't get along well. It happens sometimes. Let us know if you use different media and the results. I usually stick to +R media myself. The best are Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Made-in-Japan labeled Fuji, Maxell, and Sony. Also limit your burn speed to half the rated speed of the media as a general rule.

Are you creating a data disk or are you using NeroVision Express to import your divx files into a dvd compilation? Have you tried backing up a commercial dvd? Does that burn correctly? Did you say that RW media works OK?
