Hi all, newbie to the forum; veteran backing up. I seem to have run into a bit of a snag with some of my backups. My kids watch movies both in the car, at home, at school all the time. They tend to want to watch the same movie over and over and over.

I've taught them how to handle backups so that they do not get oil from their hands, dust or scratches on the media. Problem is, I've noticed many of the backups are starting to skip. When I look at the discs, they are for the most part in perfect condition. I've tried to clean them with alcohol and a cotton clothe, but it seems they still have problems. Wierd thing is, sometimes they will play completely with no issues at all and other times they will skip and checker board and freeze. It's got me boggled.

Also, I've noticed I cannot play most of the backups on my laptops. I've tried intervideo windvd and powerdvd also trying to figure out if it is the player. But the movies seem to play perfectly fine then half way through the movie it craps out. I have three very cheap Panasonic DVD players on my tv's at home. Rarely do I have a problem playing back any of the movies. But the same issue. Works most of the time. Sometimes they skip.

I've tried pretty much every type of media out there ranging from very cheap to somewhat expensive. I normally use Ritek media, but am currently using Sony DVD-R 2-4x. I only burn @ 2x. I also only do main movie and remove all audio streams but the the analog. I try to do every back up with no compression or as little as possible by removing all of the needless crap. I've been told some media is foil and some is gas and that they deteriorate over time. Why is it that the movies we rent or purchase don't do this? Is there anything to protect from this happening? Most of my movies can be re-backed up over again but I've found some won't be able to and get cyclic redundancy errors. I'm stumpted. If anybody has any ideas how I can fix this or make sure I am getting the most out of my backups please let me know. Thanks all!

I've been using for about 2 years DVD Decrypter and Shrink. I like to decrypt with DVD Decrypter and use shrink to clean it up and remove any particulars. My engine is Nero 7. This isn't something that happens after burn. It's after numerous plays. Normally after about 10 plays the kids will say "Dad it's skipping". At this point I won't be able to re-record or anything. Basically it's trash. I'm using Ritek. I've always been able to backup my backups as long as I don't over play them. But movies my kids like seem to go super quick and by the time I want to try making another copy, it's already too late. I tried some of the tricks from "Old man Pete's" message but they didn't work. Old man pete has a 13 page thread in here somewhere.
