Hi there, thanks in advance for any help that does come my way. I have been burning successfully using Nero 6 and DVD Shrink until a month or so ago, when all burning suddenly ceased to work for me (including cd burning through iTunes). I assumed my software had a bug, so went and got a brand new copy of Nero 7 - however, the problems are continuing (again, I am unable to burn anything at all).
See below the message I am getting on my last attempt on DVD Shrink:

I have attempted to check that my Firmware is correct, as I saw this mentioned on another thread, but I can't work out how to run the check or install the update. Any help will be gratefully received.

Thanks very much (and hppy new year),

You need to EDIT out your Nero serial before someone hacked it.

Update your Nero to the latest 7.0.1.4 or 7.0.1.4B

Your firmware is way behind, you need to upadate to KH27, go here and get it http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1726

One of your driver's DMA is Off, it needs to enable back On. Try this link and uninstall its driver to get DMA On. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Oh God.... that's one of the worst media on the market nowadays. Seriously and no offense but I despise Memorex, especially CMC MAG -- their media is inferior when comparing to today's media technologies. Try other high quality like YUDEN, Verbatim "advanced azo/datalife plus" and Maxell (mij by Hitachi Corp.).

Yep, definitely it's the bad CMC MAG media. Remember to update your firmware for media compatibility. See above reply for high quality media.

You can get the newer firmware from here

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/information_storage/software/dvd400c_kh27.exe

That may get you sorted. If not post back here with the newer log after the firmware update.

Hi, thanks again for all the previous help - I have tried all these pieces of advice and had no luck at all, unfortunately.
Please see my latest log below. Despite reinstalling twice and following all the instructions, I am still finding that one of my Driver's DMA is OFF. I Can't find a way around this, any advice?
I am currently still using the same media, but am sure that currently this is NOT the problem - the major issue is that there is something up with the settings on either Nero or my burner, as I still can't even burn a music cd. I tried updating my Nero but don't have a valid key for that download, and in any case my Nero is still version 7.0, so this should not be an issue.

Please let me know if you have any ideas, as it's getting really frustrating now.

    Thanks in advance,)

    - firmware's up to date, though it's dated Dec 2004!!, http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1726

    - 4465MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

    - your blanks discs aren't being recognised, due to the firmware being so old. this is similar to what you should see -
    - ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date. Your blank discs are newer than the burner's firmware knows what to do with as it's out of date and neglected by the manufacturer. it happens sometimes when newer burners are manufactured, they let some drives' firmware slip by the wayside.

    Cheers Creeky

So, do you think if I use slightly older disks it will work fine for me?

Any recommendations on which discs to get?

    Thanks again.

Mate, that wasnt the problem - I have tried with Verbatim DVD+R and am getting exactly the same errors - I can't even burn CD's through iTunes either.

I have decided that it is a Nero problem, any ideas on alternative software I can use? I would like to be able to delete Nero from my system as it has been nothing but trouble recently.

    Thanks in advance.

i don't know too many burning alternatives but you're underestimating the importance of your firmware being so out of date. firmware is what teaches your burner about media/burn speeds and if it's so out of date it just can't detect/write to discs properly. i seem to hit this resistance every time i post about firmware being inadequate/out of date, i always seem to get the poster disbelieving it's the firmware (or lack of firmwware). you need to trust me on the firmware thing, the truth is there 100% in the Nero log, when the firmware/drive can't recognise a disc you see a 1-liner as it doesn't recognise the media. if it can recognise the media you get a 3-liner such as the example i posted

I fully agree with creaky, not only because I know him (here), but it's because of my experiences and knowledge that I've acquired. In order for your burner to write properly, your burner needed to have the most current firmware available, so it can diagnose/verify where to write, what's the best strategy to write, media compatibility, etc. on the blank media, especially if they're the latest kinds of media.

Firmware and media plays a very important role when it comes to burning. I can tell you that, if I'm going to burn a new MCC004 (16X Verbs) and I didn't have the latest firmware on my burner, then there is a 50-50 chances of getting a "coaster" (most likely 90%) because my burner CAN NOT recognize the new MID aka MCC004, it can only recognized the old MCC003 because it lacks the firmware for media compatibility. Therefore, I will definitely end up with a "illegal disc, medium write error, illegal key request, failed to write to disc, burned failed at 8X, etc."

Below is an example from a successful burned log of mine. You can compare yours to mine and see if you'll notice any differences.

I am not sure why you are not listening as regards firmware, these chaps know what they are talking about, unless you update your fimware you will not get much more out of them.

    [bold]UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE!!!!!!!!!!![/bold]

    Do you get it yet?

Unless you have, then forget what I have just said!!

Ok, sorry but I am really confused now.

I have the most up-to-date Firmware on the site that has been posted, and yet you are saying that my Firmware is out of date.

In lamen's terms please, because I am very new to all this, but is there a way that I can sort this out or do you think I will need to buy a new DVD burner?

Thanks again for all your help.

the firmware is dated 2004, it's already having trouble recognising whatever those discs were, so the discs are newer than the firmware knows what to do with, ie the firmware is now 2yrs old and is not equipped to deal with some of the modern discs out there

These guys have given you great advice. Nothing seems to be correcting anything. Since you're using XP use system restore and go back to a date where you were having no problems burning DVDs with Nero version 6.X. That might tell you if it was Nero 7 install or if you burner has problems. Use the same media that worked last if you can. Anyway this is a free and quick check, if still can't burn, then store back to today.

System Restore has been no help either.

I will just buy a new DVD Burner and fit it myself.

    Thanks.
