Hi, i've been trying to rig my tv via its "audio out" sockets to my hi-fi, alas without much success.

Does having a vcr and sat decoder hooked up to the tv [via scart] somehow cut power to audio out on the tv?

Many TVs have a menu where you must turn the TVs internal speakers off manually to activate the the audio out...older one's will have a toggle switch in the rear panel by the other inputs/outputs.

Thanks Gerry, I tried that already but no joy. Can hook everything up to the hi-fi via the video, but was curious as to why tv outputs wont work.

What is the make and model of the TV?

Yes, onboard (TV) audio often must be disabled to activate line-out audio.
But then, line-out often has 2 modes to choose from: Line Level (or full-volume) and Variable (or controlled by the remote control setting, ie. less than full line-level).
Hoolyuk you might have it setup correctly, but your volume is not line-level and cannot be heard... so check that out, it's more likely than your audio-out being 'broken'.
    Hope you get it going,
    Regards
