How comes recently everything I buy and burn, the main movies are always larger then a standard dvd. I am sort of a newbie with dvds, so is this mabey in place to prevent copying or have I just been getting large ones recently. btw..I do remove all the unnesessary material. Alot of the movies I have recently burn't have had small skips and some blockage in the movie. Is this because I used maxell brand to do this bunch? They only pop up once in a while. Any help would be much appreciated! Oh and I use nero burning rom 6.6.16. I have just seen that the DMA on the burning drive has been turned off on neros info tool.

Yes movies now a days are larger even without all the extra stuff. Remember though that most original DVD's are dual layer meaning they can hold more info - approx 8 gigs. If by standard you mean the single layer disc your burning to - well they only hold about 4.4 gig. So compression is needed.
As for your playback issue - yes it could be the discs - when you're buying media look for made in Japan (sony, fuji maxell). The only exception to this is Verbatim. Make sure you do not burn a max - stick to 4x to lessen the chance of errors.
To turn dma make on here's a guide for help:
