i recently got a cd/ dvd burner combo for x-mas, but when i try to burn a dvd it only says cd burner on the "which drive to write to?" im looking right at the box, it says cd-r dvd-r writer dombo, its a benQ pls help!
well, i use nero and deep burner i dont know the model # (i typed wrong, i ment i was looking at the box earlier) i can select the drive but it says the drive is a cd writer not a dvd
Wolf, I wonder where this drive came from if the model number isn't on the box or on the drive itself. Download DVD Identifier from the site in my signature below and post the text exactly as you find it in the "Drive Selection and Drive Write Capabilities" box when you run the program. If we don't know what hardware we're dealing with, it's difficult to determine the problem or even if it's a DVD burner.
well, it said on the box and the papers that came with it that it was a dvd and cd burner but i hav no idea how to use dvd identifier ---EDIT---: i went to my computer and clicked properties and it says this: BENQ CDRW 5232x | dvd/cd-rom drives
I don't know, Wolf, I'm just going by the model number you provided and that model number is a CD burner only. It could be someone put something in the wrong box.
Hope that you haven't had it too long though. They might get picky. DVD-RW's are not expensive though, unless you go with a Plextor 716a which is top of the line. Many good ones can be had for under $50.00. I just go a NEC 3550a for $46.00 shipped to my door. Installed it and it works great. Cheers.
It reads DVD-ROMs and CDs, but only burns DVDs. It is what is termed a combo drive. You need a DVD burner preferably a dual format DVD Burner. At the less costly level, I would recommend a BenQ1640, a NEC 3550, or a Liteon 1693. At the upper end of the price range is the Plextor. Buy from Newegg if you can. You may be able to work out an exchange with Dealtime though which may be to your advantage. Tell them you though you were purchasing a DVD burner. They may or may not be sympathetic.
