I recently recieved a hp 740 e for Christmas. I plugged it into my usb port, which happens to be a 1.0 I started to back up my dvd's and when I went to burn them from the harddrive I would get an error message telling me that the write was cancelled due to bad media. I was using Maxell 8x dvd+r's. Some of them worked, but many of them did not. The discs are clean though and brand new. What I'm wondering is if anyone has any ideas or has heard of these types of problems with the hp 740? I wouldn't care too much, but since my usb is a 1.0 it takes hours to burn a disc and I would like them to work on the first try as much as possible.

I think usb 1.0 may be your problem. Maxell is decent media. Maybe you need to by a usb 2.0 pci card and put in your pc unless it's a laptop.

    Good Luck

    Hello and welcome to Afterdawn.
First it could be your media Maxell are cheap take it from me I have a cake box full of coasters.
Second it could be your USB port there are pci cards out there that you can plug into your computer to update to a 2.0 USB.
Also it would help to have your computer specs, CPU ,RAM, OS, and finally what programs you are using to burn with.
Also do have any error logs?
If so please post them here and the experts can give you a hand.

Thank you guys for the quick responses my buddy told me about this site and I've been reading for a bit now and really appreciate the information. I will update the usb for sure in my pc, any suggestions as to which brand or does it really matter? I'm using clone dvd and any dvd for software. My computer is a Compaq Presario 4403, 128 mb of ram, and I'm operating Windows xp Professional. If you have any other questions just let me know. Again I appreciate the help.

So I got some decent dvd's, Verbatim. Then I got a 2.0 USB Port. It worked perfectly when I ripped the dvd to the hard drive, but when I went to burn the image to a disc it froze, twice. I'm going to exchange the burner for a new one. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

128 RAM for XP is not really enough, it generally uses around 240RAM just to run, can you upgrade your RAM?
You may be asking it too much to do a burn with!
