hi guys ,i hope i'm not going to bore you with my: i had a old italian tape (pal)transfered to dvd by a company here in my town. now since i am in this movie as an actor (22 years ago just a stint)i showed the dvd to my kids(i am in the usa today,and my kids don't speak italian). i like to try to add subtitles to the darn thing but i don't know how. i copied all the files of the dvd in a folder on my desktop(it has a bunch of vob ifo and bup in it). i tried to open the files with DVD ENCORE (which my son told me i can type subtitle to it )but the program does not open those kind of file. what is the best way to add subtitle to the darn thing ? and what program lets you add subs to these above mentioned files without converting to something us. little help?
It's not a hard thing to add subtitles to DVD that doesn't have them, but it can be time consuming. So you will need some patience for this project, especially if it is your first time doing it. Also, there is more than one way to do this. I'm going to tell you how I did it. There may be easier ways so if someone has a better idea then by all means give it a shot. The general steps I used to create my final DVD was to first to demux my original DVD files to get the elementary streams, usually a .m2v file (video) and .ac3 file (audio). Then I created my new subtitle file. I chose the .srt format for my subtitle file. Then at the end I put them all back together, the original .mv2 and .ac3 files and the new .srt subtitle file to make the final DVD. The tools you would need to do this would be software to demux the DVD files into the elementary streams. I used the demuxed .m2v and .ac3 files then re-muxed them back together to create a temporary .mpeg file which then had both video and audio. I loaded this file into Subtitle Workshop so I could create my new .srt subtitle file. Subtitle Workshop will play your movie and let you type in your new subtitles. You can then save the subtitle file in any format you want. I chose an .srt text file. After my .srt file was created I then went back and remuxed my original .m2v, .ac3 and newly created .srt file to create the final DVD. This can be a long process. You have to type in the subtitles and time them so they show up just where you want them to and for exactly how long you want them to. I think my project took over 2 weeks to complete. You need lots of patience and lots of free Sunday afternoons. Here is a guide that could help you. tanx for the info moonrocks but i'm still stuck:after i demuxed the files (pgcdemux)i remuxed them (muxman)and tried to load them in subtitle wrkshop but it won't load them , i also tried to convert the vob files with -vobtompg- and when i tried to load them in subtitle wrkshop it gives me an error and shuts down. what am i doind wrong?
After you demux you'll have an m2v file and an ac3 file. I used TMPGEnc Plus (It has a free trial) to create a temporary .mpg that I could load into Subtitle workshop to create the .srt file. After the .srt file is created you'll use something like srt2sup to convert the srt to a sup file so you can remux it with your m2v and ac3 file at the end to create the final DVD. http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tp.html http://www.shipleys.eclipse.co.uk/srt2sup.htm With TMPGEnc Plus, if you go to File, MPEG tools, you'll see where you can load your m2v and ac3 to remux into an mpg. Then in Subtitle Workshop go to Movie, Open and load the .mpg file.
tanx for the help moonrock: i've installed tmpgenc plus and did like you told me ,my temporary mpg was there but it still did not open in subtitle workshop (it says has encountered a problem and need to close). the file crashes also windows media player (when tryng to play)the only player that plays the file is the vlc player:could it be that has something to do with codecs?
So, you have remuxed your m2v and ac3 files using TMPGEnc Plus to create an .mpg file, and TMPGEnc reports no errors when doing this. But the .mpg file has problems playing in Windows Media Player and Subtitle Workshop? That doesn't sound right. The first thing I'd want to check is if the .mpg file is really OK. I would open the .mpg file in a basic mpeg2 editor like VideoRedo Plus to see if it plays OK there. If VideoRedo Plus cannot open the .mpg then something has gone wrong in creating the .mpg file. If VideoRedo Plus can open and play the .mpg file then save it as a new .mpg from within VideoRedo Plus. Then try loading that .mpg file into Subtitle Workshop. http://www.videoredo.com/
problem solved:the mpeg did not play because of a filter not working correctly. to be exact:"ivivideo.ax" - WinDVD Video Decoder filter. probably time ago somebody installed windvd trial on my pc,and when the program got unistalled every mpeg kept on trying to play trough this filter that windvd installed. found problem ,fixed and now everything works fine in subtitle workshop! i just wanna tank moonrock for the assist. good night and good luck
