Please forgive me if I don't include everything, first time here. I recently added a dual layer 16x burner and cannot seem to get it to work. I am using the latest nero ver 7.0.1.4 and I am burning a dvd ripped with DVD Shrink 3.2. I have the 16x dvd burner as the master and the 8x single burner as the slave according to the jumpers. The movie WILL burn using the 8x drive writing at 4x speed. The write speed for the 16x burner is not selectable. I am using Sony 16x DVD-Rs. I made sure my DMAs are both ON. Not sure what else to try. Any suggestions??? I have a 20 pack of coasters for the taking..... Here is the log:

    - this is one of those craply named generic burners but i'm pretty sure the firmware is out of date, we just need to know what make drive it is so we can find the firmware info

    - 512MB is what i consider the minimum for dvd work. you should get more memory, and for now you're gonna have to dig deep to close down as much as you can to free up more memory

    - 4465MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

    - update the firmware and reduce the burn speed

    - whoa! what's thge hurry, slow it down to 4x or 8x

    - CDRALW2K.SYS is part of Roxio. try uninstalling Roxio (doesn't always play well with Nero), then you might need to fully remove using Roxio Zapper - http://www.microadvantage.net/utilities

yup. it's bad enough these sort of drives are rebadged by more than a few manufacturers (ie confusing) but to name them with crap generic names such as "DVDRW IDE 16X" is ridiculous and is virtually no help for troubleshooting

The DVD drive is Digital Research Technologies and the model is DDVD16DL. I have tried to find a firmware link but was unsuccessful. Also the write speed is set by nero and is not changeable. Any idea on how to change the speed?

not much help on google, i even tried here - http://www.dr-tech.com/drivers and the website is crap.

all i can suggest at this point is putting the blank disc in drive BEFORE hitting burn but i doubt that's gonna be all that's needed until we verify the firmware

It seemed to work just fine at 8x speed. I guess I will have to lower my expectations. Thanks.

Here is a thread where 16x burn speed is discussed, and cussed.. :)
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/265933
You don't save much time by going 16x and you increase errors significantly by going that fast. First time i tried a 16x burn, i got a coaster. And it was a Verb 16x +R ,and i had burned those at 4 and 8x with no problems. I only did the 16x burn as a test, and it showed me that 8x is actually a better burn speed for my drive as it produced less errors than burning at 4x.

cheers Maxburn, i'd got busy looking at the logfile and overlooked the original poster actually wanting to burn at 16x.

nothing else i can add to the 16x other than don't do it!

A089 suggest its possably BTC rebranded but not sure. The only ones I know of rebranding the drive is Gigabyte but ya never know.

If you have dvddecrypter right click on the drive inside dvdd and select check for firmware updates to see if it finds any for you.

Btw does your user name suggest 95 bravo or is just a user name.
