    Hi,

A friend of mine has a son, who got a used xbox for christmas. Every time he cuts it on it gives him this message:

"Xbox live is updating your system."
    "Xbox live is not responding."
    "Please try again later."

Is there a way to disable Xbox live? Because I don't think my friend has
internet access. Any help would be appreciated.

Mine did this before. This means your dash is kinda corrupt.
Can you play games? Also no there is not a way to disable it. YOur gonna have to hdd swap to fix the prob if you cant play games!!!
Ps do not unplug your xbox for more than 5 hours or your seriouly screwed and you will "HAVE TO HDD SWAP"!!!!

hmm. so you are gonna have to perform an hdd swap!!! Do you know your hdd key?Have an eeprom backup? Or another modded xbox? An Hdd swap is where you have one xbox run another hdd so that it can be fixed. (we modders use this when we cant use tha dash to ftp the files over.)

If you do have a modded xbox pm me or message me on yahoo or aim and i can further assist you!! I will be on at about 4pm central time. My yahoo sn is ***Edited Out*** and my aim sn is ***Edited Out***.

do you have any clue what your saying?
I unplugged mine, put it in a box, drove 8 hrs, played on it while on vacation for a week, then did the same thing and brought it home.
No problems at all with unplugging it.
if you want my 2 cents on HDD swapping here it is.
Just read a tutorial on softmodding like this one
    http://teammodders.com/viewtopic.php?t=562
then you can buy a new HDD for your Xbox which even a cheap one will be much bigger than the wimpy Hard drive (HDD) it comes with.
then you can install it like this.
    http://teammodders.com/viewtopic.php?t=672
softmod your xbox, and use Slayer 2.6 or other auto installer to
put everything back on the new HDD.
i am not sure if you can turn off auto update, but i am sure there is a way as i do not even have Xbox live, and the auto update is just a file on the Xbox that i am sure can be deleted.
but you can not doo anything if you can not even boot up to the dashboard.
have you tried just pressing the eject button to start the xbox rather than the on button?
go to the site in my sig, teammodders, those guys will be able to help you if there is any way to get it fixed.

Did you even read what he put? This has happend to me. I know so just shut up. What happened is his dash is kinda corrupted. This happens mostly when a restore is performed from a corruped dash.
Have you heard of the clock cycle problem? Read up on it before talking crap.
