I have tried to install NERO several times (for my dvd/cd dual format drive). I continue to get a Protection Error 89 and Error 251 during the installs and even if I ignore the error messages, I try to run Nero and it gives me the same error messages.

I used to have Adaptec (Roxio) on my computer, however uninstalled and ran Roxizap to completely uninstall. I also disabled my virus protection program during the install. Still no luck.

I've gone to Nero's website and "updated" to most recent release for all of the different Nero programs within the 6.0 Suite. And, I checked Microsoft's site for any necessary updates to my operating system.

I'm running Windows ME, Pentium III.

Please help !!! Memorex's Customer Service Dept was not much help.

Uninstall the Nero you have -- use the proper Clean Tool from Nero.

    Then--:

You had Roxio software on your PC at one time -- May i suggest that you do a thorough cleanup of your Registry -- Open REGEDIT and search for Roxio ... with the Find feature...! Registry Cleaner Programs will not do any good -- it has to be done by hand.

You can also go here:- http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/Clean_Tools.html

and get the Registry & Driver Clean Tool.

    At last re-install Nero!

When the [bold]FIND[/bold] gets to a [bold]Roxio[/bold] entry --- you right click-Delete it. then you go again [bold]FIND Next[/bold] .... if it finds another entry .. you [bold]Delete[/bold] again.. so on ! Eventually it will say there's none left.

If you are not familiar with Registry Editing -- best you first of all make a [bold]copy[/bold] of the existing one you have [bold]before starting to delete[/bold].

Once you go START--RUN -- type Regedit--> Enter.. and the Registry screen opens --- Click FILE-->EXport~~~ Tick at bottom [bold]ALL[/bold] then send to your desktop after naming it MYRegistry. This will put a file on your desktop with a copy of what you have now. If you mess up, you can import that and it will restore your PC to the point it was before you started editing it.

I believe EVERYTHING from Roxio is gone and have uninstalled Nero completely. I did a scandisk and defrag just to be safe. Then, I tried to reinstall Nero and still get a protection error 251 (yes my virus & pop up programs are disabled).

Neither Memorex, nor NERO will return my request for information.

All I want to do is use my burner !! Help !!

    Thanks !

Did you go to McAfee virus scan lately ? or any other online virus scan online ?

Am asking cause either you have a virus in your PC or you have leftovers from a online virus scanner left in your PC. Just for spite do a search for :- [bold]CMAPIENG.VX[/bold]D and [bold]CYBERKRN.VXD[/bold] and tell me if they are in your Pc !

Better yet run a HijackThis and post your log file !

    Yes, CMAPIENG.VXD & CYBERKRN.VXD is at c:\programfiles\cybermedia

What might you suggest to get rid of them ?

    Not really familiar with HijackThis...

I should have also mentioned that yes, I run virus scans regularily.

I run McAfee. Haven't had a virus for some time now.

I also run Adaware and S&D ocassionally.

The 2 files you asked about had dates on them from 1999.

Have a great day -- Now you know what an online virus scanner does -- they are a pain causing more problems to sell you antivirus software -- they will find virus that do not exist and leave behind VXD's that create hell when you install good software.

Thanks for coming back and closing your thread.
