Hi, Having just install a new LG DVD ROM, my old one packed up. This DVD ROM will play bought DVD's but will not recognise or play DVD's that I have made. They play ok on my DVD writer, so why not my new DVD ROM? It will recognise CD's no problem.
Try burning on a diferent brand of disk to see if the DVD ROM prefers one type (+ or -) or brand over another. Burn at slower speed as well. Bokktype to DVD ROM if burning +R disks on a burner that will support this function. If your unit plays store bought video disks there is nothing wrong with the setup or drive.
Yes I have tried as you suggest. I have tried the DVD's on another DVD ROM (PC) and they work. I did speak to someone yeasterday and they had heard that LG ROM's can be somewhat tempremental with some media, but I was using verbatim and Ricoh, so there should be no problem. I think I will just take it back and ask them to try it out, one should not have to mess about getting things to work. The reason I changed my ROM was because my old one had problems recognising CD's and DVD's.
I would then look at the firmware in your LG DVD ROM , even if it is new, and see if they have an update for it on their site. It's the firmware that tells the device what to look for. If your burner can do bitsetting, try your current media, (if it's DVD+R media,) and bitset it to DVD-Rom and see what happens then.
Firmware less important for readers that it is for burners. I have an oudated 5 year old DVD ROM that recognizes all 8X brands + or - and + wasn't even around at that time. If the DVD ROM is fairly new, all of those 8X media should be read without a firmware change.
Firmware IS what the DVD device uses to recognize the media, period. What is good for one is not necessarily good for another. If they’re burned DVD’s and not bitset to DVD-Rom, then there can be a problem. Why it might not be a problem with most readers is that they usually read DVD-Rom media, not burned DVD’s. My Dell Laptop's CD-DVD combo cannot recognize some burned DVD-R media, (2 years old,) and also one of my DVD-Rom readers in one of my PC’s, also 2 years old.
Boyzone, Try ScubaBuds suggestion, see if you can find a new manufacturers firmware for your drive. My tip to you is, don't do any hacked firmware at this time, in case something is wrong with your drive.
Thanks for your input, I looked at LG site and also tried to contact their UK office, as of yet I'm still not able to find any firmware update for this drive.
Boyzone The good news is there is a firmware patch for your drive. The bad news is that is doesn't work at this time! More bad news... Seems your drive has conflicts with Windows XP as others have stated the same. More good news… DVD-ROM drives aren't expensive today, (under $20,) and it might be a good time to look for another brand.
