somehow, a virus has made it's way onto my PC and causes the process winlogon to use 100% of my CPU power, resulting in only 1 frame every two seconds in any application, usually worse. For example it's taking me several minutes to type this. None of my big applications work properly while this is in effect, windows media player, microsoft word, and I haven't dared play any games. A few people seem to have this program that isn't picked up by AV apps but none of the solutions they have posted have worked for me. Does anyone know what I can do about this? Note I have AVG active guard, and run Adaware periodically.

Well I've tried two of those but although I routinely delete it, a virus keeps being detected in my System restore folder, and the problem appeared the dat afteer I did my last system restore, so I have my doubts that that will solve the problem.
I will try cwshredder, spybot and the online scan. The interesting thing is, the problem only occurs when I'm on the internet so I know it must be some worm/spyware that's sending rogue information - I don't see my modem idle for more than a few seconds at a time, no matter how many programs I close.
I'll write those apps to CD, run them and tell you the results.
    Thanks in advance

Also advisable to run recommended programs in safe mode.

Hi, I've just found this forum, I've got this winlogon virus. Can you tell me, did the solution you tried Sam,downloading and running those 5 programmes, did it work permanently? I'm really stuck, can't do a System Restore because the machine crashes when it shuts down so the restore fails.
    Please help,
    Ruth

Well, I've tried all those and apart from a couple of cookies nothing was ound, and I still have the prob.
It is a new pc with new Windows XP, SP2, not yet registered. All I have done is load a few drivers, for keyboard,DVD RAM drive, Monitor. Then I put on AVG and activated the Firewall. Then I transferred my Address book, Favourites and stored emails from my external back-up Seagate drive. Then I downloaded Windows Updates, and I'm pretty sure it was after that that it went wrong. I started to get an Error message when booted up, that winlogon.exe encountered a problem and had to close.Closing down after that causes a blue screen and fatal Error message, and I can only shut down on the tower, or sometimes it will shut down, without the 'Windows is closing' screen, and then restart. I'm completely stumped.
    Can anybody help? Please.
