I am trying to burn copy protected dvd's and having no success. My laptop is a Sony Vaio of American origin and is locked to region 1. I'm currently living in a region 2 country and have used Fab express and then dvd decryptor to copy dvd's and to make them region free so I can view on my Laptop. Once the process has been done via the above software the files are on my hardrive but wont play. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

    Hello and welcome to Afterdawn.
It is quite simple but remember this, once you do this you will only have a certain amount of time the region can be changed and then your drive will be locked out.
    Right Click on My Computer
    Click Explore
Right Click on your disc drive
    Click on Properties
    Click on the Hardware Tab
Click on your disc drive in the window
    Click Properties again
Click on the DVD region tab
And then click on the country where you are at. There is a number there that will tell you how many times you can change the region.
    And then party on.

There is free software that will make your dvd drive perform as a region free drive:

    http://www.dvd43.com/
    http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/showsoftware_dvdrk_1.html

The above software can be tempermental though. I have DVDRegion Killer on one PC but it won't work on another, on that one I use DVD43. Give it a try. When the software works it's great.

AnyDVD, commercial software, is good too.

    http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html

If you've already ripped the files to your hard drive then use a player like PowerDVD or Nero Showtime to watch the movie from your hard drive. For example, in PowerDVD you would use the open files option and navigate to the video_ts folder where your ripped files
    are.

You should be able to use Decrypter to rip and burn a region free DVD.

The actual drive is locked completely, I have no more changes left. As for dvd43 and anydvd, I've tryed these and none of them work. Unless theres something I haven't done with the settings. The main thing I want to do is to be able to copy region 2 dvds on my U.S Laptop and then put them on disc. When the files have been copyied by fabexpress and stored on the hardrive I understand they wont play because my drive is locked to region 1 but would they work if I copyied them to disc and played them in a multiregion dvd player? and if so which program should I use to put them on disc. Thanks for yor help though, any other help would be appreciated

With the files already ripped to your hard drive you should be able to tell Shrink/Nero to burn a new DVD which is region free. You can set the region inside of Shrink. A multiregion DVD player should play them assuming there are no PAL/NTSC issues.

Just curious, since you've been able to rip with DVD Fab, have you tried just DVD Decrypter to rip and burn your region 2 disc to a region free disc? Does the region 1 problem on your Sony Vaio interfere with that?

Hi Moonrocks, Yes I have used Decrypter on its own and no joy. The project starts but then the buffer seems to go wild, going back and forth and then the project stops.

If you are running WinXP, try restoring to an earlier point.

I don't know what's going on there with Decrypter, it's pretty rock solid. Are you using version 3.5.4.0? Make sure you have enough free disk space and memory and nothing else is running. If you haven't already, try ripping in File Mode.

If you can't get Decrypter to rip the disc, then use Shrink with Nero. You could open the files on your hard drive that you've already ripped with Fab, and make sure Shrink is set to region free, then burn a new disc.

Hi Moonrocks, Do you think you could give me a brief guide using shrink then nero? I really do have no bloody idea, I can just about find the on/off button on the Laptop. Cheers Mate. Also, do you think there should be a problem copying region 2 discs if my Laptop is completely locked to region 1 and is of American origin?

Here's a good guide to get started with DVD Shrink. After you hit Backup, then Target Device, you'll have the option to select burning with Nero. The guide will also show you how to set the region, and most of the other basics.

You should be able to burn region free discs with your Laptop on region 1.

@ moonrocks, are you saying that AnyDvd is unstable?

No. I think it's very good software. I meant to direct my "tempermental" remark to DVD43 and DVD Region Killer. I think those two will work most of the time but they are flaky on some configurations. On one of my PC's I had to remove DVD43 after a week because of all the problems it gave me. On my ohter PC it works like a charm.

Ah! Jolly D. I agree with you, AnyDvd is far superior than Dvd43. Just needed to clarify, easy to misread what you posted!

Hi Moonrocks, using shrink wont work. When I place the DVD in the drive It states "dvd doesn't match the region of the drive"

But didn't you already use DVD Fab to rip the DVD to your hard drive? You can use Shrink to open those files. Instead of Open Disc select Open Files in Shrink. Then browse to the files on your hard drive.

Yer I did with one movie (just a test) but it took an eternity, I thought there may have been a quicker way. Do I have to put the files through Decrypter after DVD Fab has burnt them to the Hardrive? or can I just place them straight to Shrink. Also, even if I've run the dvd's through DVD Fab they still wouldn't play on my Laptop would they if the drive is locked to region 1 until placed on a disc right?

Once DVD Fab has ripped the files to your hard drive you are halfway home. Normally you could just drag them into Nero to burn them but with your region problem you have to set that straight first. Use "Open Files" in Shrink to open those DVD Fab files. Once they are open then check out the guide to see how to set Shrink for region free, and burning with Nero. Then hit "Backup" and hopefully things will work.

The DVD Fab files on your laptop should play fine with any DVD software player. You could use PowerDVD or Nero Showtime and browse to where those files are and play them off of your hard drive. Your DVD drive being locked to region 1 won't affect that.
