Do you use Norton Anti-Virus software?
    Did you burn any movies?

You must have updated either manually or automatically the newer patches that just came out for windows xp. Run update and see if there are any to be found. If not, then part of your problem could be in the updates that have just been done. Also delete your temporary internet files and cookies and see what that gives you as well. If space is taken up, something is in that space and it had to come from either a download, picture or music files, or software installs.

Do you have any backup programs running. Try installing Zone Alarm and this should let you know what's accessing the internet. You may then be fortunate to identify and eliminate the culprit by limiting the access of various programs. Here's a simple thought to see whether it's something accessing the internet or it's something occurring locally on your HDD. Disconnnect from the internet for however long you think would be sufficient to make a difference and see if your HDD space is less. If it's less then you know it's something local. If not then you have a general idea where to concentrate your energies. It sounds so much like Windows updating itself automatically or some program updating itself, but you didn't see any evidence of that. Still thinking.....
