    Hello,

I discovered this problem 10 minutes ago. As I was trying to boot BF2, a textbox appeared saying "please insert your Battlefield 2 DVD into your DVD-ROM" (if not an exact quote, something like that. You get the idea! :p) I thought to myself that I'd taken it out last night when I played the gamem it was the last thing I did with my computer before swithcing it off last night, and on this evening, but when the dvd-rom opened, I saw the bf2 dvd laying on the tray as supposed to. So I figured it hadn't been laying correctly in the drive, so I made sure it was proparly placed in the drive, and closed it. After this the autorun of the game should have begun. But it didn't. So I simply pressed the BF2 shortcut, but again the comp asked me to insert the dvd. I opened My Computer and made the discovery: NEITHER my dvd-rom or my DVD writer showed! Only my generic drive showed (using daemontools), and it was shown under the "mass storage devices" catagory (I've got a norvegian OS, so my translation probably isn't 100% accurate, but hope you still hang on!). I found all of this very strange. So I right clicked My Computer and chose properties. From here, I chose "Hardware" and then "device manager". From here I "opened" the "DVD/CD-ROM drives" button to check if there were any problems regarding my ROMs but to my bewilderment, the drives DID NOT show! Only the generic drive showed! What on earth has happened to them! Played BF2 without any probs last night, and now my DVD-ROM nor writer appears ANYWHERE?

    Desperately need help!

    Sincerally
Norvegian viking (who wants to play his games and burn his illegaly dl'ed dvds and games(!) :p)

PS: I know that my DVD writer is a NEC, but Im not sure of the model. Regarding the DVD-ROM I havent got a clue. The company name isn't showed on the front of the drive or anything.

    My comp:
    Pentium 4 3.40 GHz
2.75 GB RAM (even though 4 in 4x1GB modules is installed, only 2.75 shows.. Go figure)
nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX produced by MSI
2x250 GB with a total of about 400GB left

    Hello again!

Problem solved. Uninstalled Nero and decrypter, then rebooted my comp. That did it. decrypter and nero are back and running and so is my dvd drive and writer!

I can't comprehend how uninstalling Nero and Decrypter would cause your drives to reappear?? Have you done any work in your pc lately and possibly left the IDE cables loose for some reason...Just maybe??? I've done it plenty of times like a dummy...lol

I once installed a PSU into my dads PC, I sorted all the cables neatly, I tried to boot the PC & got nothing, I checked the plug fuse & everything before I realised I forgot to plug in the ATX power connector :$... I swore at it a few times before that too - I find swearing solves most problems

Nothing like a Louisville slugger on the side of that computer case to knock some sense into that stupid hard drive that doesn't want to boot. Or maybe a baseball bat to that stupid motherboard or that stupid stick of ddr memory that's suffering from memory loss and doesn't allow the computer to post. Computers need a good thrashing every now and then, then again just RMA the damn things!!! I don't think baseball bats are covered under the warranty, plus you won't put another dent in your wallet having to buy everything all over again.. As you can see, building PC's has caused me a great deal of brain damage!! LOL..LOL
