I need help I've a solid DVD (NEC ND-3540A) burner in my desktop, but would like to build an external burner for my laptop for mobile purposes. I'm considering either of NEC ND-3550A, Pioneer 110D or LG GSA-4167 (just because it burns DVD-RAM) internal burners and buy an external enclosure separately. Here's the issue: I've heard that the external burners will only work as specified (according to their stated write/read capabilities) if and only if the system it's connected to is up to par. I have a fairly good laptop. Here's the spec's in a nutshell: Centrino 2.0GHz 1 GB RAM 80GB hard drive USB 2.0 I use DVD Decrypter / DVD Shrink combo to rip and burn. Use Nero 7 Ultra Edition to author video. Will the above spec's sufficient to run the external burner to its fullest potential (i.e. burning at 16x)? Need feedback before I visit newegg & make my purchases. Thanks in advance.
it will work but at 16x you will need the proper blank media beware of the cheap media also make sure the firmware of the burner is the latest
David66, Thank you for your reply... I'm crossing my fingers that the external will work I only use TYG03's and Verbatims 16x, so should be fine, I think. Thanks again.
Here is an enclosure that I KNOW for a fact will work well with the Pioneer and NEC. (As far as reaching 16X, you may or may not reach it with USB 2.0 just so you know... I burn @8X myself, but I researched this quite a bit to satisfy my curiousity) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145341 The LG is a bit more finicky, though. BTW, I have 3 external burners... See my profile.

@teflonmyk Yep, got a 160gig in one, (black,) an 80gig in the second, (silver,) and my Asus DRW-1604P in another, (black.)
Hi, Thank you all for your input... A friend of mine who advised me against LG as well... Told me the same thing to go for either Pioneer or NEC. I've already had a good experience with NEC 3540A, so may go with the newer 3550A model. My biggest concern was whether it would be worth it to go with an external burner if it's not going to burn at 16x since I already have an internal 8x burner (NEC ND 6500A) in my laptop. But the laptop burners are not meant for heavy burning, so might as well go ahead and get an external. Will research BYTECC enclosure... I have 2 Kingwins for my external 300GB & 250GB HDDs, which I've had good experiences with. But, seems BYTECC works better with the DVD burner... Thank you both for your help!!!
