trying to burn a *.iso file and clonedvd2 failed me for the first time ever. it burned to completion and gave the familiar 'successful burn' message, but the resulting disc was no good. tried to burn the same image file with DVDshrink and fortunately this software recognized that there was an error. unfortunately i don't speak the language in which the log is written. i mean, i have my suspicions, but i was hoping that someone fluent in the language might help me translate. from my crude analysis it looks like nero might be hijacking a critical driver or library (WinASPI?). the following is the log from DVDshrink and i apologize for posting the entire log, but i didn't want to exclude something important. can you please recommend a course of action. i was thinking about just uninstalling nero, but if i could just get my competing software to play nice, i would prefer to keep them all. any thoughts? many thanks in advance!

hi, i've teleported this thread to the Nero forum..

also, the formatting of your logfile has gone skewy but i managed to find the necessary bits and tidy 'em up a bit :)

No worries about posting the whole log, it looks like there's only one burn entry in the log. For future reference subsequent burns are appended to the logfile and the way to differentiate the burn entries is via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======".

The thing to watch out for when there's more than one burn entry is that your serial numbers can creep into the posts, in Nero 7 the serial number(s) would be just under the section divider i just outlinedand usually begin with '5C' or similar.

    - firmware's up to date

    - to me this looks as DRM protected data

    - 4465MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

    - very nice discs

    - i'm not too sure what these mean exactly, so not sure if they're the actual root cause or not

    - these messages are ok, they're just a 'Pioneer thing'

can't see anything else in the logile...a bit stumped so far..hopefully someone else will pop by with info on the 'Error on LockVolume: Incorrect function' error as i've googled for it and am none the wiser. i last saw this error here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/217392 but we're awaiting feedback from the original poster (chel0921)..

thank you for your guidance, creaky... and many thanks for not yelling at me for posting in the wrong section. so i guess you are telling me that my suspicion is incorrect--the fact that the ahead WinASPI is being used rather than the system WinASPI is not the problem? why is it that DVDshrink prefers to use the nero aspi, and should this concern me? --i'm guessing that i shouldn't concern myself with that. also, i noticed that there is a checkbox to 'enable burning with nero' and it is chacked by default. should i uncheck that option? why is it that shrink wants to work hand-in-hand with nero... i find that odd. how good is DVDshrink's own burning software? it appears that DVDshrink's own developers have more confidence in nero's burning software than their own. any opinions?

my new suspicion (thanks to your insight) is that this DRM protection could be the problem. i read the afterdawn glossary entry for DRM and it says that it won't allow you to make a copy of the copy, and that may be what's going on--because the *.iso file is a copy. and it's strange, but DVDshrink was able to encode the movie files, but it just failed to burn them. i later went back to the temporary files (*.vob, etc.) and was able to burn a successful copy of the movie from those movie files. weird right? so maybe it was the DRM--what do you think?

p.s. i used clonedvd2 and anydvd to make the *.iso file.

i thought that might be pertinent.

DVD Shrink has no burn engine of it's own, only the ability to use a burn program, whether it be Nero or DVD Decrypter etc. I personally don't burn that way, i let Shrink do it's thing, then manually burn a 'dvd-video' compilation in Nero Burning Rom, i just like to have a little bit more control over the rip/burn process.

As to DRM i don't often come across this in Nero logs very often, so only mentioned it, am at a bit of a loss as to what the problem is in your logfile, i'm leaning towards it being these 2 errors 'Error on LockVolume: Incorrect function.

SPTIDismountVolume not successfull' but as i don't know exactly what these mean i can't be more specific about where your problem is..

    creaky,

thank you for that reply, that is very interesting. i did not know that shrink doesn't have it's own burn engine (i'm new to DVDshrink). if i had known that, and had only used it to encode the movie files, i might have saved myself a coaster.

can you describe your rip/burn regimen? is it just DVDshrink for the rip and Nero for the burn? don't you need something to break the CSS encryption like AnyDVD or DVDdecrypter? i use DVDdecrypter occasionally when AnyDVD is not up to the challenge, and i didn't know that decrypter could burn... i thought it was rip to hard disk only?

anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts so far. i would love to know what this error was all about if you ever run across the answer.

    Thanks!

i use DVD Shrink predominately, even though it's unable to handle new encryptions. i do mostly buy older films anyway so Shrink is still more than capable. For any new films i buy, i still (try to) use Shrink. if it bombs, i simply reach for DVDFab Decrypter (free) - http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm and before that i used to use DVD Decrypter. i haven't got AnyDVD and whilst i have nothing against AnyDVD i'll just use DVDFab while it's still out there and working.

Also, i only ever do movie only, i rarely watch the special features etc on the original discs, and certainly don't want that stuff on a backup. So basically i'm catered for, then all i ever need to do in Nero Burning Rom (i've used this for years that's all) is open a 'dvd-video' compilation and drag the video_ts folder into Nero and hit burn.

yer, Dvd Decrypter can burn, i only used it about once, just to see howe it worked, it's a great burn engine, many ppl swear by it. there's also imgburn from the author of decrypter - www.imgburn.com but i still haven't got around to trying it. i'm a bit lazy sometimes, if something works i tend to just stay as i am, if something breaks i just go out on google and fix it or find a workaround/alternative program

i'm the same way with the laziness...

clonedvd2 and anydvd have been my workhorses for a couple years now. anydvd breaks the encryption about 95% of the time (probably 100% of the time if i would consistently update to the latest version) and for the other 5% dvddecrypter does the job. i recently sought out dvdshrink because i needed something that would take a large *.iso file (meant for a dvd9) and compress it to fit a dvd5. it's rare that i need to perform this task, so i had been using roxio disc copier--because, as far as i was aware, it was the only software that could do it. but, as we all know, roxio is crap, so i started playing around with shrink. i really like shrink--it seems very sturdy... very stable.

i didn't know that decrypter could burn. i will have to explore that program a bit further. i wonder if decrypter would have been able to avoid the mysterious 'lockvolume' error, or at least handle it without ruining the target disc. i'm pretty sure i already deleted the *.iso file, so i guess we'll never know...

    thanks for your input creaky
