Internet running pretty slow

Hi, my web browsing seems to be running slow compared to usual. I have broadband and usually when I'm surfing the web and I click on a link, it comes up nearly straight away. But in the past few days it's taking prob 30 seconds for a paige to come up and sometimes it says, can't find please try later. I keep my system really clean, I think anyway. Is your computer name brand Gateway ??

 

The brand of my pc is emachines 5620. I think Gateway owns that brand though, because when there's an update, A Gateways customer service pop-up appears asking if I want to apply the update.

 

Ok.. then DO NOT REMOVE ShowWnd.exe that is not a trojan or virus !

ShowWnd is included with the Chicony keyboard software and is part of your background startup applications. Gateways products have this !

Before you run any HijackThis logs -- always do this first :-

Run those first in SAFE MODE :-

Spybot S&D
Ad-aware
SpySweeper
CCleaner

Then run HijackThis to post a log file!

I'll run those in safe mode and I'll post it later( on my way out to work :0( I already removed ShowWnd.exe, I've actually changed my keyboard so it's not a gateways anymore. Should I just leave it, or maybe should I try and do a system restore? Thanks for the reply and I'll start those when I return home.

Hi, yeah I ran ad-aware, spybot search and destroy in safe mode and my system came up clean but when I ran xoftspy it showed up 2 Rbots and a graybird trojan in the registry. I've removed them but the internet speed isn't better, still takes awhile for a paige to load up!! So ShowWnd.exe, is this a trojan or to do with gateways? I have removed it. Your Registry must be polluted with dead entries after this cleanup -- google for a FREE Registry Cleaner and run it too !

More top info from you jeanc1, thank you. I removed showWnd.exe last night. Could this be harmful? Should I do a system restore, would that bring back the deleted .exe? In the hijackthis backup folder I have 4 files. Any suggestions on how to recoup ShowWnd .exe? Thanks again. Oh yeah, the reason I don't really want to do a system restore is because I removed a trojan and rbots today which would be prob be restored aswell as the showWnd.exe but if I have to do it, I'll do it and just re-do the virus scans.

 

Sorry, just saw these new replies after I posted. Those virus scans I ran, I did do in safe mode, but I didn't do ewido in safe mode so I will now. So get rid of soundman .exe, yes?

 

Dont bother putting back ShowWnd.exe in -- Gateway does run without it -- the taskbar will not show up for the keyboard that's all !

Ewido should pickup Soundman.exe -- look at the log before you close the window.-- if not delete it in HijackThis.

Do run CCleaner so you tidy up that Registry ! My last post suggested you google for it -- didnt remember i had told you about it before <<sorry>>

 

Ok, I ran ewido in safe mode, it came up clear so I deleted soundman.exe in HijackThis and I also ran CCleaner. So I guess this is as clean as I'll get my pc. I'm gonna change the wire that runs from my phone socket into my router over the weekend just incase it's gone haywire or something. When I'm downloading, I'm hittin decent speeds as usual, but for some reason it's taking longer than usual for a paige to load up. Very frustrating!! Hi, I just want to update on the slow internet speed situation. For some reason yesterday my internet speed seems to be back to it's full. I really don't know what caused it to slow down for awhile, maybe it was an issue with my broadband provider, don't know to be honest. But anyway, my pc is back to normal and thanks again for everybody's help

Next time you have such a problem -- and you want to investigate -- may I suggest you run a speed check on your PC ! This will tell you if you may have problem at your end with your ISP.

Assuming you are in the USA -- Do a check on a good day and use it as reference for when things are not so good <<smiles>>
