i am using dvd shrink 3.2 to nero demo 7.0.1.4, and when burning dvds, only about 1 in 5 tries at burning work. it gets to about 99%, then an error message pops up.

if someone could help me that would be great... i have tried solving this problem with the advice of other threads (better media, slower burn speed) but still... errors persist :S

    here is my log:

First you need to go back to your post and edit out your serial number. It starts with 1C83- Just go to the pencil symbol next to your post and put XXXX over the numbers.
Nero is up to 7.0.1.4b. Now a minor "b" upgrade might not be much, but your drive is not being recoginzed by nero:
and Nero gave it a generic listing. Usually an update of Nero fixes that, and hopefully it will in your case also.
    http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-up.php

I can't find your drive listed at the firmware site.
You need to close down all multi-tasking, when burning. 70mb is not enough memory for Nero to work with. Kill off any programs not needed.
Keep the burn speed down to 4x.

i put the burn speed to 4x and closed all programs... but the same error happens right at the end of the burn.

Go ahead and post the latest burn log. That way we can see if anything is still showing up as a problem. Also check that TSST corp drive at it's website and see if your firmware is up to date. Even Nero couldn't recognize the drive and gave it a generic listing.
This was all i could find at the firmware page, and it is for the A model, and yours shows B, and they didn't list any firmware for that one.

It looks like you are using Taiyo Yuden media according to the media code, but there are FAKE Tys out there. If those are genuine Tys, they should be good. You could try a Verbatim data life plus or some other GOOD media to eliminate the media being bad possiblilty, but it sounds like you tried that already. It might be the DVD burner is flakey. I would only change it if you can't get anything else to work.

thanks, i had two successfull burns in a row since my last post, and thought everything was fixed... but unfortunately, i was wrong. i am trying to think of other possibilities, could it be that the drive is overheated maybe?

Did you get the nero update? It looks like you still have 7.0.1.4 and they came out with 7.0.1.4b. Now i know it is a shot in the dark at this point, but your drive is still not being recoginzed by Nero.
You get that when either Nero is too old and can't recognize a newer drive, or if you had Nero OEM for a specific drive, and changed to another drive, it will change the new drive to a generic listing as Nero OEM is bundled for that specific drive only.
Maybe,, just maybe the "b" upgrade will detect your drive.
Seems like something is wrong with that drive. Here is something you can check that may be causing the failed burns. Go to Nero InfoTools and check your system ASPI layers.
It should look something like this:
Also here is what AD says about ASPI layers and how to install them:
    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm
If aspi doesn't take, you can run force aspi:.
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/frcaspi.cfm
I think one of the programs in it is killaspi and this one removes the old aspi. Sometimes you get problems if you try to install new ASPI over a corrupted one, and that is where the kill aspi program comes in. It is just something to check, and corrupted or missing system ASPI can and does cause failed burns.
If ASPI comes back fine, then it is really starting to look like you might need a new burner. There isn't that much heat generated when we burn discs. Usually an overheat problem is due to CPU overheating during the encoding phase, and that will just shut your whole system down. Blue Screen of Death..
Just as a complete check, you can check the cables on the drive to make sure they are connected properly.
It looks like you are doing everything correctly, and i am running out of ideas. I hate to see ppl have to change drives as many times it is just a DMA or software issue, and not the drive. But, sometimes nothing works because the drive itself is bad. They are getting cheaper, and you can get good ones for around 40 bucks. I would go with an internal drive as the externals can be slower, more expensive, and seem to have more problems getting set up correctly. Check ASPI and update Nero. Hopefully one of those two things is the problem. If not, then it boils down to the drive being suspect.

    Hello
I have also major problems with the same drive. It ships with Dell notebooks(ic Inspiron 9300). The manufacturer is Toshiba-Samsung, with Dell DE03 firmware. I've tried burning on several media DVD- : Verbatim, Memorex, Philips, TDK, on 2x... 8x... . I've used sever burn-programs... Aprox 1 out of 2 disc were not working. Some of the bad ones are not recognized by this drive, or by a dvd-rom on my other computer, or on an stand alone player. Searching on the web learnt me that I am not the onely one who sufferd with this crap-drive. I have sent an email to the Dell-techs, and I am waiting for an answer.

I'm getting the very same message at about 99% of burn phase. I have been monitoring this forum and searching for an answer everywhere to no avail. Please would someone who understands all this stuff please take a look at my Nero log and give me a clue. I would greatly appreciate any help at all.

Lets see what we can find in this log..
    Nero needs updating to 6.6.0.18
    http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php
Firmware looks up2date on the pioneer drive.
Try shutting down more programs and not mult-tasking while burning. You have the minimum amount of memory for DVD rip/burn, but you have to watch that it is not being gobbled up by other programs.
    Very good media there..
now this error can be a couple of things. One is that the drive itself is bad. Here is a list of what to try if the drive is not dead.
and this error looks like it was unable to recover your table of contents TOC.
which may have something to do with the original disc being dirty or scratched, but those usually come up as CRC errors.
I really don't see any of the usual major problems in your log.

MaxBurn, thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I have implemented your suggestions, yet still can't burn a video dvd. I've been researching and trying to solve this problem for some time now. The crazy thing is that I burned a few hundred discs before I got this error.

I took it in for service and asked them to replace the dvd drive. They said the drive was fine, they had successfully burned a cd in it. Then they sold me a spyware program I desperately needed since I had thousands of instances on the hard drive. Whatever. I guess that's what you get when you buy a service policy from them.

Anyway, I think I will get a new dvd drive and hopefully, be done with it. Do you suggest any one burner over another? Do you think I should buy another Pioneer?

Again, thanks alot for your help.

On second thought, here is the last failed burn log:

I closed all the programs in the toolbar tray. That didn't seem to free up much memory. Am I going about that correctly. How do I make sure nothing else is running in the background?

NOTE: I have never burned a DVD while I have another program open, and I walk away until it is complete. I really didn't know you could burn and use the computer at the same time. Is that stupid? There is so much to learn. I thought I knew enough about computers. Thank goodness there are forums like this one and helpful, knowledgeable folks like you.

    Sincerely,
    Tammy (tellens)

Sorry to hear that you still can't burn. Just an FYI a DVD burner has two lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs, so burning a CD doesn't completly eliminate the drive as being bad. The DVD laser could be dead while the CD laser operates, but, it may be something else. Lets try some different media. The only reason i say this is there are some fake Taiyo Yudens out there, and you might have some. Just guessing, but changing media is something easy to try, and doesn't cost much money. Tys are the best, but very rarely they don't work on some systems.
This error, usually comes up with bad media, or outdated firmware (your firmware looks up to date, and i never call Tys bad)
Try a Verbatim data life plus disc and see if it makes a difference.

Just to check something out, run this program:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/su...s=no&filekey=aspichk.exe&language=English+US, or you could also check it with nero info tools as i showed earlier in this thread.
Your ASPI layer is old, as the latest is 4.7
Here is the latest ASPI package.
    http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/su...sess=no&prodkey=ASPI-4.70&language=English+US
Now this new ASPI may not make a difference, but it is worth checking and updating. What AD says about ASPI and how to set it up:
    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm

Try those things before we give up on that pioneer drive.

You are doing the burning correctly if you are not doing anything else with the computer while burning. It is possible to do other things while burning, but you are using up memory, and asking the computer to do stuff while burning. It can cause playback issues, or failed burns, so most do as you do, and let the thing burn without interruption.
Now let me see if i can find you a free program that frees up memory. Just closing the programs in the task bar doesn't free up memory. You could do a ctrl+alt+del and go to task manager under processes tab things can be killed off that way, but you might close something you need, and the list can be confusing to figure out.
Try this program to free up memory:
    http://www.download.com/RAMBooster/3000-2086_4-10465453.html?tag=lst-0-8
It looked like it would be a good free program to try for this.

I can't see anything else in the log that needs fixing.
Try the different media, and check your system ASPI layer. If neither of those work, the only other thing i could think of is the drive itself. You may also want to De-Fragment your hard drive. If you rip DVDs, most ripping programs put temp files on the HD and then delete them after ripping. Do this enough times, and your drive will start to get fragmented. A badly fragmented drive doesn't usually cause a failed burn, but will induce skipping and pixillation to a copied movie. Windows comes with a defragger built in, (not the best, but better than nothing). Go to windows file explorer and click on your C: drive. Right click for properties, and Tools is one of the tabs. Click on it, and De-frag HD is second program on list. Highlight your C: drive and under Action tab do the Analize for that drive. If it is fragmented windows will tell you.

Hey MaxBurn, thanks again! I can't believe you were able to take time out for me so quickly.

It just so happens I have a spindle of Verbatim DVD+R's here to try. I had been using the Ty discs all along and then one day I got the calibration error. I looked around in AD and concluded it must be the media, since they must be knock offs (I get them at BJs and they had even gone down in price.) Same deal with the Verbatim, then I tried Fuji DVD-R's with no luck.

I was determined to get back to burning so I updated firmware, even went back to an earlier version of Nero and so on. A few said they had burned successfully but, then went click click in my DVD player. And the computer said they were empty. That's when I took it in for service.

After that I get the could not perform end of disc at once error.

I check my defrag needs very regularly. So much so that the analyst usually say you do not need to defrag at this time.

Gotta get to work. I'll try your newest suggestions this eve and see what happens.

Again, thanks for all your help!

    Tammy

    tellens,
Those Tys sound like fakes, and they could be the main thing causing your problem here. The media code is correct for Taiyo Yuden, but rip off companies know how to fake that media code. The only real way to know for sure is to check the media code on the media side of the disc. It is hard to see, but near the hub of the disc in the media itself is a set of numbers and letters. Doc aka kivory666 knows these codes and can tell you if you have fakes just by the numbers and letters listed in the media. Here is an example from Real Tys [bold]GD000272[/bold]. That was from a ty dvd-r 4x. Got those from Doc, so i know they are genuine Tys.
Try some REAL Tys found in Sony, Maxell, or Fuji, only if the spindle says made in japan. Or, use a Verbatim data life plus, again, only the real thing. Stay away from Imation, Phillips, HP, and many of the store branded media. Some have a good manufacture or two for the discs, but many use the cheapest media they can get, slap their name on it, and charge you full price. You can buy genuine Tys online at http://www.supermediastore.com . I like the DVD+R format the best.
Check and try the other things i listed in the last post, but GOOD media will make all the difference in the world.

I went out of town this past weekend so, I'm just getting a chance to post the new logs. I downloaded and applied the RamBoost program. I don't think it freed up much though. 3%?

The Verbatim + disc burn failed immediately which is exactly what happened when I tried them before.

NOTE: You were right about the codes on the discs being tiny. I could not see it with my reading glasses on through a magnifier. I know something is stched there but,I would need a microscope to see it.

I guess I'll have to order the real thing from the link you provided, or do you think I should replace the drive now?

P.S. These are the same discs I have had numerous succeses with, until the "could not perform end of disc at once" error. Oh yeah, first it was the "calibration error."

Also, I have several movies backed up on my 2nd hard drive and they play just fine on the PC. I'm not sure if that gives you a needed info.

    It's so frustrating!

Thanks a million for all the help you have given. I am very grateful, and I think it could help others with similar problems.

    Hello
After reporting my troubles to DELL, they first send me a list of tasks I had to perform to see if it wasn't a software problem. (deleting Sonic, installing Nero, clean up the register, update Bios, Update Firmware...etc). They send me the CD's of the original software, so I could backup to Sonic as well... After that all, the same errors still occurred. Now they have replaced the TSST by a new NEC-ND6500A. Unlike some others, I am a sattisfied DELL-customer... (btw, the support of Dell came from their Dutch service center.)
I just have one question. The NEC ND6500A should be a 8X DVD writer, but Nero tells the max is 6X... (after updating the firmware)

Started having trouble tonight out of nowhere. Wife is an English Teacher who is scheduled to show To Kill a Mockingbird in class this week. Unfortunately, the class copy in the library has been destroyed and I was drafted to remedy the sition so the poor lads and lasses may endeavor on in the pursuit of life, liberty, and time to goof off in class.

I've got a copy of the movie on my HD in avi format. Generally, Norton takes care of these pretty easily by convertng them to dvd format before burning.

However, I've tried 3 runs on this, with a stop to run a cleaner through my DVD burner and just aren't having much luck.

Attached are my logs if anyone can figure out what's going on.

Media being used is Taiyo Yuden on an HP DVD Wrighter 200J, which I have had almost no problems with up to this point.

Thanks in advance for any light you might be able to shed!

    Chris

    @cdlampkin,

This particular version of Nero is full of bugs and causing untold problems, I would suggest you uninstall it, run this clean tool
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html to remove all traces and re install current version of 7.0.8.2

Usually there are many ppl jumping in and helping, but it looks like you ppl have been waiting for me, as no one else has jumped in while i was missing. Sometimes im a quick responder, and sometimes it takes me almost forever to get back to a thread. :) Anybody can help here, i wont be offended.

    @tellens
Looking at your last log, it really looks like the drive might be shot.
Here is what makes me think that:
The internal target error being reported has 3 possible fixes listed.
Also please check that media link i provided again. I edited it as i put the wrong one up before.. The internal target error came back on the last log, and it was on the first one also. Sure sounds like a bad drive. But before you junk the drive make sure you try some genuine Verbs or Tys. If those TYs are fake, maybe they could give the internal target error, but i am not sure about that.
That wont tell you if the drive is fine, as a DVD burner has two lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs. So, you could have a drive that has the CD laser working and the DVD one shot. I think almost all combination cd/dvd drives use two lasers, but im not 100% sure about that. Id take it back and tell them to go ahead and copy a DVD successfully. If they can do that, then you should be able to do it also. I am almost willing to bet large sums of money, they cant do it unless they replace your drive.

    @LaraPR
Right below this in the middle of your log is a couple sets of your serial numbers
Go back and edit them out before someone steals your numbers. They start with 1C80
The latest release of Nero 7 is now being reported as bug free. I updated my Nero 7 to the latest 7.0.8.2, and i am not finding any bugs so far either. An update of your Nero might help.
    http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-up.php
You also have INCD installed on your system, and it conflicts with Nero.
If you want to keep using Nero, the INCD has to go. To remove it, use this clean tool that Nero provides:
    http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/InCD_CleanTool.html
It also reported a media error, so try the above suggestions, and if you are still having problems, try different media.

    @cdlampkin
That one points to the drive but doesnt say exactly what is wrong.
The only thing i can think of is to try to update Nero 7. The version you have is a non-buggy one, so an update might not help. In your case it might be a drive failure. You have nothing to loose with an update though.
    http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-up.php
I couldnt see anything wrong with that log.
Here is something that could be a problem
You have plenty of memory, and have enough left over for Nero. But what that shows me is, you had more than just Nero open. Maybe you have an anti-virus checker on, and it is conflicting with Nero? Try closing down as many programs as you can before burning, even the net connection, you wont need it for burning. One of those programs you close, could be the one causing the Nero problems.

Hi Max, I havent come into this thread because I think its RUDE for people to tack(hijack) there problems onto the end of existing threads when they can start one of their own.

Also I have spent very little time here today due to other commitments. You're doing a good job, keep it up, Cheers

Nero 7.0.1.4 was in fact the BUGGY version I think 7.0.1.4b cleared things up.
