I have a 4yr HP computer with a 16x DVD ROM (+R/RW media only) and a 4x DVD Writer. I plan to upgrade my writer with one of the new BENQ 16x writers but I am wondering whether or not to replace the ROM with another 16x BENQ writer. Can someone list the cons of doing this. I think the pros are that I will be able to handle both +/- R/RW medias, I have a 2nd writer and maybe it reads faster than my ROM drive (Need instructions on using Nero to look at read speeds since 16x is a max number). Nothing is wrong with the drives I have now I mostly want to decrease the amount of time spent backing up my DVDs since I burn at 2.4x 95% of the time.

If the dvd rom is working ok, I wouldn't worry about replacing that. I bought a new dvd rom recently, and it's 16X, so you're good there.

Are you sure that reader won't read a DVD-R? I agree that if reader works well, I wouldn't be in a hurry to replace it. The writer is a diferent story as upgrading will provide many new advantages.

I looked at the HP manual that came with the computer and it does not really say what DVD media the DVR-ROM drive reads. It just mentions DVD media. I have never placed a DVD-R in the drive that I am aware of. I have used either DVD+R or store bought DVD movies. My writer definitely uses only DVD+R/RW. I am thinking of just getting the writer and upgrading my RAM memory instead of replacing the DVD ROM.

Yep, more RAM and and updated writer will do much more for your sustem than a new reader (which will probably read -R even if the writer in the same computer won't burn -R).
