I have been working on converting a VCD to DVD (my first try), everything is done, except finally burning it. The problem is, the mpeg file is 4.9Gb large. What software can I use to compress it further? I really want to have it on one DVD.
DVD Shrink is a freebie that will Shrink DVD-Video (MPEG2). You have to have the files in DVD Video format. That entails having your VOB, BUP and IFO files in a folder named VIDEO_TS. A quick start guide can be found at http://www.dvdshrink.info/ .
Trying to compress a 10 GB mpeg2 file to fit on a DVD. I used NeroVision Express 3 to create the dvd files and then tried to use DVDShrink to make the dvd files fit on a dvd, however after analzing the dvd files it looks like dvd shrink can only shrink it to 6.9GB. Is there any way to compress the file any more? I have tried to use WinAvi to convert it to a avi first to get the compress but I get a win32 exception when trying to convert it. Any ideas would be great. Thanks Troy
10Gb file?! That's more than a dl disc can hold! You might have to go for a dl disc to burn that 6.9Gb file... Unless you want to cut it in half...
Is there anyway I can compress it to make it smaller? The other files that I have converted into avi files are about 10% the size of the original.
I don't know how bad the quality will get , but there may be a way. I've heard some people talk about saving the transcoded files to the hard drive and then opening those again in Shrink to transcode it a second time. Just remember to change the target to another folder. Use the quality settings to help with the compression problems. Permiggs may have the right idea, you could transcode to an 8.5GB DL if you have a DL burner. The compression wouldn't need to be as great as what you already have. That would just mean using Custom as the compression setting and watch the content bar to make sure you don't exceed 8.5GB, save that to the HD and then burn on DL. DVDCopy4 might do the compression to DL automatically. I've never tried transcoding a set of files larger than a DL. Just open it in DVDCopy 4 and select the 8.5 as the DVD size and check the single disc box. You can get a full function trial at http://www.InterVideo.com/ .
