As you can see from my signiature I am planning to acquire an X2 system i the not too distant future, but which type of RAM would you recommend with it? I can get normal PC3200 cheaper for a lot cheaper than any other types, but if it's really worth it I'll go higher if necessary - I've noticed the X2 has a 2Ghz FSB so theoretically Dual Channel 3200 will only run at 800 won't it? If there are advantages to going for higher speed memory (like PC4000) I may consider it, when prices drop a bit.
PC3200 is the maximum memory at the moment for AMD cores. you can use 500MHZ ddr but unless your overclocking it wont make any difference. there will be a new fleet of AMD X2s comings out soon and a new fleet of motherboards to match as they are being upgraded to support DDR2 which runs at speeds of upto 1GHz. memory running in Dual channel still only runs at 400MHz it is just accessed in adifferent way. That 2GHz fsb on the dual core is hyper transport.
Yes, I'm afraid I'm still learning about Hypertransport. Now, these ere DDR2 chips, I'm assuming they're going to be on Socket AM2 only? If that's the case I may not end up getting one as they probably won't be out when I buy this PC, and it sort of has to come at a certain time you see. If it's a matter of days then I will, but there's also a cost issue to resolve too.
