I have burned several dvds on my computer but have just gotten into trying to check the quality of my burns. I have used Nero CD/DVD Speed to scan my discs. I read where people are getting scans in the 80-90 range but all I can get are well below that (around 40). The discs play fine in my stand alone so I do not know what I am missing. I am currently using Sony DVD-R (made in Japan only). My burner is TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B. I believe that my media is good quality so is it my burner. It is what came with my gateway. Is it a good quality burner, average, or pitiful. Since my playbacks are fine should I even worry. Newbie so go easy on me. Thanks
Welcome to AfterDawn.com Autiger. Here is a sample of a nice disc scan: And here is a bad disc scan: Above all try to use quality media like Verbatim or Tayo Yuden. Nowadays that's all i use... Make sure your burner's firmware is up to date. It should be TS11. Here the link: http://www.samsungodd.com/Lib/popup...ad&fname=200511281418147101_TS-H552B_TS11.BIN
Thanks - for some reason I cannot see the bad scan on your response. One thing that I noticed is that I burn my dvds at 4x and set the speed on the scan at 4x but the speed at the bottom right goes above the 4x (unlike the 3.99x on your good scan). Could that be a mistake that I am making on burn speed. I use dvd decryter to burn and have it set to 4x. Also, what is an avg amt and max amt of PI and Po errors that I should look for in a burn? Thanks again
whoops, one more thing. The TS11 listed at the end of your burner info on the good scan, is that the firmware? Mine is GA02 I think. I am not on my computer that I burn with so the GA02 may be slightly wrong. Do I need An update? Thanks
That is endeed. See the diference the firmware does? On the bad scan i used Verbatim media. Nothing wrong with the media quality, the burner just wasn't ready to deal with it. It never failed after i done the update! This is the flash utility needed for the update: http://www.sec.co.kr/product/odd/support/download/sfdnwin.exe GA02 would be the Gateway OEM (New version:GA04) ftp://ftp.gateway.com/pub/hardware_support/drivers/win_xp/multimedia/FirmwareGA04.exe
Thaks for the info - extremely helpful. How about the burning speed exceeding the 4x? Also how does this burner rate? Good? Bad? Avg? I love this site, I just wish everyone did not speak Chinese all the time
LMAO, chinese eh? I know, been there myself! On my sig you'll see the answer to every doubt i ever had! This burner is just average, i bought another one, an LG late last year, but decided to take it back and keep this one. Got a RAM upgrade with that money. It does what i need to do... I just keep the firmware up to date all the time. But back to topic, to achieve a good quality scan, a fool's advice is to stick to 4x. I burn 8x sometimes, but only if the media is rated at 16x. With that said, i normally half the speed of the rated media. (i.e 16x rated media i burn @ 8x, 8x rated @ 4x and so on...) This is my own way to deal with it, but since you're fairly new to this i would recommend sticking to safe grounds by burning @ 4x at all times. Like i said before, good media [bold]IS VERY IMPORTANT[/bold]. Verbatim and Tayo Yuden are VERY good and well proven quality disks, not only after burning but a year down the line as well...
