I tried to copy a DVD that I purchased so that I had a backup in case it got scratched, and it returned a message saying I couldnt do it because it was protected.
Is there a product that you know of that will correct this error?

You can use DVD Decrypter to remove the protection. Then I suggest using a program like dvd2one to convert the movie so it will fit on a 4.7 dvd-r.
