I recently posted about how slow my ripping and burning was using a Celeron 2.6 ghz w/ 1 gig of RAM, typically would take about 1.5 to 2 hours to rip and burn a DVD movie. To just burn a DVD would be around 50 minutes. I have since switched out my burner and placed it in my 1.3 ghz Pentium 4 with 256 of RAM and ripping and burning is now only taking around 45 minutes. To just burn a DVD is now only around 8-10 minutes. I am suprised at the big time difference between the two machines, but I guess it just has to do with the Processor Architecture, can anyone explain? (I would've thought with all of the memory and the speed of the Celeron that the difference wouldn't have been as big). Thanks!
I have a Pentium 4 processor and I love it. The first PC I bought had an AMD processor in it. I can't remember exactly what type of AMD processor it was, but it was definately an AMD and I hated it. I'll take a Pentium over an AMD anyday.
Not really the answer I'm looking for, but I've had some recent experience with the new AMD 64-bit Athlon's and they seem to fly, even compared to the latest versions of the Pentium 4's. Although, ripping and burning aren't going to be that much faster with newer processors, not that you want them to be much faster because it can effect the quality of your burned DVD. Thanks!
Great topic. of course celeron is going to be slower, but when it comes to copying dvds, i'll never give up my little(refurbished) celeron 2.5 ghz/256 mb/ 40 gb. why? because i don't remember the last time i had any problems transcoding, ripping or burning. i have seen many people with big computers here, posting about the problems they have been having with ARccOss and RipGard. i have done all those movie without a problem. go little celeron go.
Keep in mind your celeron can outperform your pentium 4 with a little overclocking. Although the celeron has less cache and isnt recommended. What you should do is buy the cheapest amd 64 or pentium 4 then overclock it. All my chips I have both brand run over 4 ghz with my fastest running 4.2ghz (I got the details from overclockers.com). Dont try to get too fast with your burning as it causes distortion.
