I have not used a Mac since the Apple IIC, so I can't help you for comparisons. However, most people use AnyDVD (decrypter), DVD Shrink (compression), and Nero (burning) for most of their burning needs. VOBBlanker may come in handy for some of the newer protections, but AnyDVD normally takes care of that.

Backing up a DVD is as easy as using DVD Shrink to compress to the harddrive and using Nero to burn it to your blank. That's assuming you have AnyDVD running.

AnyDVD offers a 21 day free trial. DVD Shrink is free. And the Nero suite is $79.99 (unless bundled with a burner, system, etc.).

I would have to say most use

    DVDFAB-decrypting (b/c it's FREE)
    Shrink-compressing
    nero-burning

And DVDFAB is really only needed for some movies.
