sigh, all b/c of this 'illegal disc' error from nero. so i searched this forum for answers on how to fix this illegal disc error. and the most popular answer was that people's firmware was out of date. so i thought i'd upgrade mine. i downloaded the firmware for my liteon dvd burner from http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm after i installed it and rebooted... it seems that my DVD burner broke! i mean its still powered. but it doesn't read cd/dvds. so now im in a pickle. does anyone know how i can fix this problem? if so please post as soon as possible. thanks.
Did you have any applications running when you updated your firmware ? like those:- ANYDVD,Antivirus,Screensaver, firewall, antispyware, background music,Ram Retriever, .... ?
no, i didn't have any applications running in the background. i've tried uninstalling the whole driver itself on my DVD drive. when i rebooted my computer it reinstalls the dvd drive and yet, it stilll doesn't read a single CD. what could be the problem?
Can you find the original firmware on the website where you got the update ? -- This may be a simple problem caused you may have used the wrong firmware ! Now when you update firmware, it's always best you unplug any other drive you may have on the IDE channel you have it on and you connect the drive you want to update alone as the Master of that channel ! You didnt give the model number of that burner -- so I cant help you finding the original firmware !
the model number of my dvd dive is SOHW-1633S heh, dang. i didn't do what was best when updating firmware. most likely scenario is that i downloaded the wrong firmware. if i did install the wrong firmware... is it possible to just get the RIGHT firmware and install that?
The liteOn website gives this one as the NEW firmware for your drive :- DR16BS0Y.zip Windows 572 KB 2005/12/23 It's here :- http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_firmware_dvd rw.asp If you didnt do any damage to the EProm in the drive, you should be Ok by re-installing this one. -- you may also try one of the older firmware listed there --- sometimes new firmware are buggy !
There is a newer firmware then they list on that site listed on there other site here http://www.liteonit.com.tw/ODD/WebFW/SOHW-1633S/DR16BS0Y.zip If the bsos or the bsoy gives you an error when you try to flash dont let it bother you. It will mean you may have like you said flashed with wrong firmware. If you did it can still be fixed. Will just take some crossflashing to do it.
so both of those links led me to the same file. i extracted it and flashed it, rebooted, and still i have the same problem. i insert a CD and its not reading it at all. any other alternatives? -what do you mean by cross flashing?
Crossflashing will let the drive use other drives firmware. For instance my 1633s runs the 1653s firmware. My 1613s runs the 1633s firmware.
This is the firmware I use in my 1633s http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/dvdrw/1653S.CS0T.patched-cf-mcled.rar I will also use it in the 1613s when I get around to tacking the 1613 back out of the set top dvd/hdd recorder I have replaced the old drive with. Go here to read all that can be done with the liteon drives. http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html
Hi Jean. My mod status is for dvdxcopy part of ad only. And by no means say that I know any more or even as much as other users here. BTW I like seeing your sig pop up from time to time.
wow...whompus.. i think you got it. i just ran the firmware you're running and my dvd drive is back and even better. hah. thanks to the both of you for helping me.
Glad to hear you got it sorted. Remember you are now basicly running a 1653s drive. So for future firmware updates check the codeguys site for already patched firmware. Or get omnipatcher from there site so you can crossflash any version you want to use at the time to the burner.
