    I have been burning with an NEC ND-3550A using DVD shrink and that media everyone says is crappy (memorex)and have no problem viewing or burning except on the Playstation 2. Everything I burn works fine on DVD players and my xbox but what is up with the PS2? A friend of mine uses NeroVision and his media is the same (Memorex), but his plays well on all PS2s. I have tried NeroVision, Nero burning software of all kinds. Just wondering if it's because I don't have the DVD plugin for NeroVision, however I do have Power DVD as my dvd encoder, I believe that's the only difference. I too don't have nero burning rom only express, if I download it is it just a trial or does it go with express 6?

    Booktyping is a way of writing to a disc that tricks you player into thinking the disc is a DVD-ROM, you can only do this with with +R discs.

    Thanks I just read up on it now I have to check NECs site to see if my ND 3550 A is capable or whether i need some software to make it work, until I get some +rs though I am happy being able to view on my Xbox, any more thoughts? I may get Nero Ultra so I have everything I need, Express works fine for now but I really need the full version with burning rom and all the extras. I had a trial of 1 click DVD Copy and had the same problem so I'll try the Booktyping next.

    Let me save you some time, NEC does not support booktyping straight out of the box. You will need the help of some hacked firmware. I have the 3540 and another one of my buddies here has the 3550 (same as you) we both use hacked firmware and are reaping the rewards...Here is a link to the site:

    http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/

    You will want the 1Y5 version as it is the newest.

    In the notes in the read me file of 1Y5 it says the 3550A is not riplocked so do I still need the software? The 3550A is the only one that says it's not riplocked the rest all have descriptions as to what the program does.

    What no one knows if i need a hacked firmware upgrade for an nec 3550A to bookwriting?
    The users manual from the hacker, (which I dont trust Hackers much especially for firmware) at http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/ for 1Y5 concerning bookwriting says that my NEC 3550A isnt riplocked therefore I believe I dont need it. I'll just get nero ultra 7 so I can set to bookwrite or bitwrite whatever its called in nero, and see what happens, thanks anyway but I can still burn to DVD-R and play on any dvd player and my xbox just not on the PS2 which is more trouble than it's worth;
    I appreciate the comments LOCOENG but noone else seems to have an NEC matching mine who can help, I'll just research and find out whats up besides the PS2 being a poor example of a DVD player.

    9mmruger has the same drive and he is using the hacked firmware...drop him a PM as I'm sure he'd be willing to lend a hand.

    Not to mention much more expensive to replace than an el cheapo DVD player from wally world due to wear and tear.
