I dunno why you would think that reading Stealth uk release or any numerous sony dadc protected films in using iso mode would bypass the protection as it does not, fact is dvddecrypter will stall at the first set of protected sectors, and drop the reading rate down to zero, fair enough if you have 8 hours or more and can stand putting strain on your dvd readers mechanism, laser, etc, to complete the task with hundreds of read errors, simply stating that by altering dvddecrypters settings to ignore these read errors, make no diff, it will just not present you with "do you wish to cancel etc" and telling people to alter the settings in dvddecrypter was one of the authors/beta testers pet hates. Saying as they are set that way for a specific purpose ie a good rip/burn etc.
By all means if you want to waste your time, then try this persons method, but try it with stealth,madagascar,brown bunny, marksman, and all latest proteced dvd,s. Then comment.

In other words, don't bother wasting your time, look at another method, one that works for example, create your own psl2 file to ignore/dummyfill the bits that decrypter knows it cannot read, then process it in shrink.

Or instead of creating psl2 files with DVD Decrypter for the individual DVDs, do it the easy way with AnyDVD. Then all you have to do is make sure your software is up to date.

Well , thank you all for abit spirited but informational thread! I think I just got two years of information in 20 minutes of reading and a whole lotta of hours of trials . Thats why I love AD. I tried the method out with Flightplan, which AnyDVD has identified as having Ripguard. I used DVD Decrypter sans AnyDVD and ripped in ISO mode, at the bad sector which is VTS_03 the read rate went down to 0 and Decrypter stated it was extracting bad sectors inserting dummy sectors and then the read rate went up again and it made it through the whole movie, at default settings. However, when I burned the file doing movie only it would not play at all my players could not make beyond the 7 second blank delay at the beginning of the movie, no matter how many times I put it in/out, stopped it or pressed play. Then I ran the whole file through Shrink and got Shrink has encountered an error, yada, yada. DVD Decrypter is still a great little program, but needs help from other programs. It no longer can do it on its own, with the new protections, which the movie studios are just going to move around in the structure. Time to move on and use what is current. Just my two cents.

I just ripped Flightplan last night and had no problem with DVDD in the ISO mode although it was a bit slow, about 4.5 to 5x maximum on the rip.. Used Shrink to get the Movie Only cause it’s a bit larger than I like when shriking..

I turned around and ripped it again with AnyDVD/Shrink/Nero.. Worked like a charm and took about 1/4th the total time…

Also did The Fog which has more protections on it.. Had no luck with Decrypter alone like you said read rate dropped to 0 so I just settled for Any/Shrink/Nero and worked like a charm..

I don’t understand why some are having trouble and others are not, on the same movies.. I use to lay it off on a Bad Pressing but I am going to scratch my head a little more before coming to a conclusion… LOL

Have you done The Fog yet? When you do let me know how it goes please..

I am not into the intricracies and technicalies of ISO and VOB files etc. but there is a simple way to copy newer Across and Ripguard disks that do not rely on programs such as AnyDVD, DVD43, DVD Fab Decrypter, VOB Blanker, PGEdit etc.

All that is required is DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink (and Nero for burning) - thats right folks DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink aint dead yet and news of their demise is somewhat premature.

Method to burn movies such as Stealth and Madagascar etc.

1. Open DVD Decrypter - use ISO Read mode to copy disk to hard drive.
2. Open Shrink - go to Open Disk Image and select the ISO file that Decrypter has created
3. Use Re-author mode in DVD Shrink to analyse and encode movie
4. Use Nero to burn.

Easy - no problems and bypasses all protections - no blank cells and no need for additional software or other programs running in background.

Not a chance mate, unless, (A) your copying a copy of the movie wherby someone has kindly removed the protection using psl2 file etc) (B)Your using originals that have no copy protection on whatsoever, thats not likely, (C) your using drugs and are just plain seeing things.

I second colw's method because it works for me too. Matter of fact that method never ever failed me as of yet, doesn't matter of release. Although lately I'm using Recode instead of Shrink. Also some movies I just burn straight from the ISO file with ImgBurn to a dl disk.

I might not have been as blunt as ascii (sure, lol). However, the encrypted movies with the newer ARccOS and Ripguard are not going to miraculously work because someone decided to put the files in an ISO folder and process it through Re-author in Shrink. The decryption software just simply was not programed for it. Shrink in the instructions on the old site, said to use DVD Decrypter for more difficult encryptions and DVD Decrypter lost support well after Shrink. DVDD won't do those movies without psl2 files for direction. So, unless someone got lucky and edited out the segment with the encryption, there's no way. Even 2oldGeek, who is a proponent of the method, noted that it wouldn't work with a heavily encrypted DVD like "Fog".

Below are the 2 methods I primarily used and it has never let me down, regardless if it's RipGuard (macrovision) or ARccOS (Sony). No AnyDVD, no DVD43, no hustle, no black screen, no glitches, always 100% success.

All tools are FREE, except for Nero. Don't worry if you don't have Nero, just use DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn to burn. Just make sure you have DVD Shrink to set on the "Target Device" as: Create an ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter.

if you are succesfully ripping any movie out there in iso mode I would personally like to see a log (please make it stealth or madagascar which we all know are problem childs)

I have asked you for a title and region numerous times now I want both title region code&zone ,then post your log from decrypter! if you can't do this it is pointless to carry on this conversation!

btw if you are going to use shrink and imgburn or decrypter to burn w/ then just start the plugin and start from phase 1 it does it all then calls on shrink which will call on luk's children! kinda chain of cammands! thought I would add that!

Despite you disbelief, I did Stealth yesterday using the method described in my previous post. I also did Madagascar before Xmas using this method.

Both were orginal disks. Don't knock it until you have tried it.

My only motivation is to provide an alternative method for those having problems. I do not know why it works but it does. I have not tried some of the newer ones such as Fog so I cannot comment on these.

I am telling you that it works for me with the method colw mentioned, matter of fact that is the method I try first.
And again, it does work for me.
If it wouldn't, believe you me, I wouldn't say so.
To be fair though, stuff might work for some, the same might not for others.

Nobodies saying that the method doesn't works we're just saying that it works too. Any movie that can be ripped and burned in ISO mode can also be ripped and burned in File mode. ISO is not one big complete package it's just a wrapper containing the same files that are in File mode which are decrypted in exactly the same way. The only thing that ISO mode offers is a more internationally recognized standard for burning, period. Everything else is the same. ISO mode files are decrypted before the conversion to ISO, just as file mode files are decrypted before being ripped to your hard disk. Now why is this so hard to understand? What you guys are discussing is about as real as astrology or Santa Claus.

I'm not the one saying it cant be done either way. Because it can.
But if you follow the thread a bit closer you'll see that the method me and colw using is presented as a no go for the newer protections.

I put it out there and Sophocles has brought it up again, the files come out the same whether in ISO or File mode. ISO is just a wrapper. So the alchemy doesn't cut it. Even 2old said it didn't work with a heavy encryption. So your guys mentor said it's a no go in some cases. Get off the witchcraft and don't confuse the novices. As soph said, if it workd in ISO, it works in file mode. I've worked with both and one has no advantage over the other unless the format lends itself to a task, such as ISO being the only thing Decrypter and ImgBurn will burn. Shrink even has a solution there, you can work with files and create and burn an ISO as the output. So, with Shrink either format will work and in different variations. Many of the other transcoders and encoders favor the File mode. There though a person can take an ISO and load it in a drive emulator and use the files same as in file mode. Or if missing the original, a person can open an ISO with an archive tool such as WinRAR. I'll say it again for those with an attention problem, the files are the same whether they're stored in an ISO folder or out in the open in a VIDEO_TS folder. The VIDEO_TS is in the ISO.

As pointed out by alkohol, there's some editing to be done if using only Shrink or Shrink with Decrypter. Those psl2 files and VobBlanker are being used along with those apps to bypass the encryption on the DVD. Putting the files in Re-author indicates something as well, editing. You can in some cases edit out the protected segment with encryption. A lot more difficult with some of the heavier encryption setups where more than one strategy is used.

Did anyone notice if Stealth had any encryption? ;) My system ran through it so fast, I barely had time to get a soda. That one ripped at 10X or better. When I'm multi-tasking or in and out, I only pay attention to the successfully completed notice. AnyDVD and Decrypter have made me lazy where decryption is concerned. I guess some people like the work and find it entertaining. After a while, I found it repetitive and boring. I'd rather pay a few bucks and get out of the editing and developing psl2(s) and trying software that is sometimes hit or miss.

It makes you wander around and wonder what is going on. LOL Guess I missed some or forgot the order of the presentation. Seems we agree though. I wish some of the learning impaired could gather what is being said without the constant repetition. Even 2oldgeek saw with "Fog" that a heavy encryption can stop ISO just as easily as File mode. As we've said all along, it's the same files in different folders or (as I said with File, the VIDEO_TS folder is out of an ISO folder or was never in one).

Where are all the computer specifications? Seems that a good analysis of programs running on a system might tell us why there are successes using different variations. Let us not forget the problems that ROXIO caused when running on a computer with other programs.

We used to delve into the system and now it seems we don't. And the entire process of making a "back-up" seemed to be easier.

I have become leery of having toooo many programs running as they might be conflicting with each other. If you have a winning combination, that works for you, Keep it until it stops working. Then move on. Don't update everything everytime because there is an update because you want the latest & greatest on your machine. If it isn't broke don't fix it. If the dog can't or won't hunt, then do something about it.

That don't fix it if it ain't broke mentality is okay, but with Apps like AnyDVD, they often update it because of new encryption strategies being added by the movie industry. In effect it has needed fixin and the current owner of the app may not be aware of it. There's the auto update option that can be turned off. I have most things blocked by a firewall, so I have to remember to check on occasion. It's sorta like goin huntin; get your supplies and be prepared. As for decryption software, there's different old sayins that apply. Like the Boy Scouts, be prepared. Then there's that one that says an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Enough of them old sayins. A person could get old playin around with em. LOL The message being that decryption software is like anti virus software, you need to keep it updated for it to be most effective. Like the AV, if out of date will still get most of the viruses, decryption software will handle a lot of encryption schemes on a lot of movies, just not the ones with new encryption schemes.

The best thing to do is not worry about it, you have AnyDVD. It doesn't matter if you use ISO or File mode, it reads them for what they are, the movie files are same, and handles the encryption the way it is supposed to. If you run into a problem, check to make sure the software is up to date or leave the auto-update on. Use ISO and File mode as it is needed with the software. If you were paying attention, I gave examples of that.

Here we're talking about file formats and decryption. Software interference doesn't come into play unless you have a decryption software that interferes with another. I hear it's not a good idea to have DVD43 on a system with AnyDVD, they're both drivers. AnyDVD plays well with most other apps though. DVD43 is free, but it's proven to be another "also ran" deal. Sometimes the movies are old before decryption is updated. The dicsussion mainly hinged around whether using the ISO file format would allow decryption better than File mode. For those familiar with what's in the box, they know they're the same and no way. The reason some are having good succsess and others not is in the software and how it's used. Not many people having problems with AnyDVD as long as it's updated. Most of the complaints are from people who aren't or can't update. Those with various success with the freeware depends on how good the app is and if it's used properly. A lot of freeware takes longer to get updated. Those with out of date software need workarounds, like Decrypter with psl2(s). A mistake with VobBlanker or not getting the psl2 right leads to problems. Once an encoder or transcoder gets a "cleaned" source without encryption protection, it's no problem to process the files, ISO or VIDEO_TS. So, the most important task in doing a backup is getting good decryption, and that's where people have the most problems. Rightfully so, as encryption is where the movie industry is spending big bucks to prevent copying.

Witchcraft or whatever you want to call it. Grasp this people, I never said that the ISO Mode was any better or worse than the File Mode. What I said was the ISO Mode handles files differently that the File Mode, has been overlooked for a long time and can break any protection crap… Guess I should not have stuck my neck out so far, so I’ll just say any protection crap up until tomorrow, maybe…

If you are working with VobBlanker, PgcEdit, Etc. then these programs were setup and designed for the File Mode.. No argument, that’s what they work with and that’s what you should use with them..

If you want to Rip a protected disk and copy it to a DL disc then ISO is the way to go…

Excuse me L8ter but, I have never posted a “How do I?” question on this forum. You only have to use your search function to find that out. I have the ability after a lot of years of digging into the fundamental workings of DOS, Windows, etc. to figure things out for myself.

If Henry Ford had lived from the inception of the automobile until today, he probably could have taught you a few things. Like, in 1908 when the first Model T rolled off the line, it had the same basic technology as the new Lamborghini, that is to say, it was an internal combustion, 4 stroke engine with a fuel system, ignition system, cooling system and oiling system. Every thing else is an improvement in technology or an add-on.

If you really think the two methods, ISO and File, are the same then try this:
Rip a protected disc in the File Mode and open it with DVDShrink in the Open File Mode. It will throw up…..
Next, Rip the same disc in the ISO Mode and open it in DVDShrink in the File->Open Disk Image Mode. It Loves it, because the protection has been removed…

If there comes a time when the protection cannot be defeated by ripping in the ISO Mode, then we will not be able to backup a DL Disc. That is, without using AnyDVD and placing Decrypter in the ElbyCDIO – Elaborate Bytes Mode ( Lightning UK was thinking ahead )
My thinking has not changed over the years, that there is nothing that a programmer can do to protect a program, or disk, that another programmer of the same knowledge cannot un-do. PERIOD.

Most of the main problems that everyone seems to be having is that, some of the new disc will not rip no matter what you do.. I do not believe this is a New protection but some other explainable reason. As I have said, I have laid it off on Bad Pressings but, I really don’t know if that is the case until I have done more on this line of thought, and I will.

As you can see the max read rate is 4.6x and it took approx 31 minutes to rip it..
The whole point is, that it Ripped it with no help from AnyDVD or any other decrypter and it can be Shrunk and burned with no problems, or burned to a DL using Decrypter or ImgBurn..

For someone who professes to be knowledgeable, you're way off base on ISO and File mode. Here's a step diagram of what an ISO file looks like.

1: ISO
1a: VIDEO_TS
1b: VOB, BUP, IFO

In File mode you have:

If you open a DVD that has been burned in ISO write mode, you will see the VIDEO_TS folder, as I mentioned before. It makes absolutely no difference with the encryption of the VIDEO_TS files if the VIDEO_TS folder is out in the open or inside an ISO folder. As Sophocles pointed out and so many have a problem grasping;

We're not arguing that a task can't be accomplished without AnyDVD. A lot of things can be done with various software. The point we're making is that it doesn't make a bit of difference what file mode is used. There is no magic panacea of using ISO instead of File. Go back and do the same task in file mode and you'll get the same results because the software is processing the same files. If I didn't understand file structure, I might fall prey to this "magic", but not this year. As for AnyDVD, it does in a few minutes what your setup did in a half hour. That only makes a difference in the freeware vs retail debate. I use both, so I could care less on that front. I use the best tool for the task, within reason.

On burning DL, that doesn't make a difference with File or ISO either, at least in my experience. By the time the files get sent to the burner, they've been decrypted; otherwise they couldn't be copied. That's hardwired into the system. I have a Plextor PX-716AL and and a HP 740i and neither seem to have any problems. The only issue I've run into is some software apps have a problem with the layer break. That comes about whether you're in ISO or File mode.

Though the interface in DVD Decrypter is different when doing a rip in ISO Read and File mode, the variation in read time is 0.01 second. The logs aren't exact due to the format, but note the decryption keys coincide with the same files. To further show that these are the same files whether in ISO or File, I'll supply screenshots of the original VIDEO_TS from the factory disc (Tomorrow Never Dies, Special Edition), the VIDEO_TS folder from DVD Decrypter File mode, the WinRAR file showing the files in the ISO, the files from the VIDEO_TS folder extracted from the ISO, and the Windows Properties for the VIDEO_TS folders created from the ISO extracted VIDEO_TS and the one created from File mode. Whether direct from files or extracted from the ISO, the files are identical. I renamed the VIDEO_TS folder extracted from the ISO in order to tell which was which. Both were named VIDEO_TS. Anyone questioning these examples can run the same test.
