Well you'd have to upgrade your cpu. Can you system support that? Me - I would stick with getting a burner that met or was under my system specs. I ran an internal a while back(or tried I should say) that didn't meet the cpu requirements but just meet the ram - too many problems. Have a good weekend too!
Hi Blinke, I cancelled that drive since it also requires usb 2.0, and I don't have that. I just place an order for Benq 1655 internal burner, internal burner are usually work w/most computers right? Or there's anything that I need to watch for? My computer is around 6 yrs old now. What I'm worrying about is that I'm afraid it's not my burner but pc errors therfore even if I bought a new burner I wouldn't able to burn. This is because I've been testing w/the burner. It sometimes recognizes all dvdr media, and also burn successfully but when I put it in the dvd player it said" No Disc" or "Disc Error". Some of the times, it wouldn't burn anything at all.
Hi andyp95 Yes internal burners will work w/ pc's - just make sure you meet the minimum requirements. Make sure you have it on separate power supply. I'm thinking your current one on it's way out. When you get the new one 1st thing make sure the firmware is current - it may be new but the firmware has probably been updated. Few other things to do (very doubtful will help current burning sitation -but good to do)- run a virus scan, do a disc cleanup and a system defrag. Let us know how turns it!!
Thanks for the tip Binkie. I did everything you mentioned..it didn't help though. I'll let u know how it turns out after I install my burner (hopefully I do it right , sighhh **) "Make sure you have it on separate power supply." by this, do you mean separate power for the internal drive itself? Sorry, I've never install a burner before, so I'm nout sure if that's what you're talking about. So there's a power supply along w/the cables itself? Should I order the cables for installation too? Some silly questions, but here's the requirements: IBM PC compatible Pentium III 550MHz CPU 128MB DRAM, ettc... Does IBM PC compatible meant any pc is ok? Or does it has to be made my IBM? I'm using a Sony one. And my is 512 MB SdRAM, is it larger than 128mb DRam?
Hi andyp95, Ill try to answer some of those questions for you. Once you install a new burner, i think you will realize how easy it is. For most new tower cases, there are only two thumb screws holding on one side plate. Once that is removed, the drives are exposed. Most have 2 cables connecting the drive, and 2 phillips head screws holding the drive itself in. The seperate power supply warning means use a power line from the power supply for that drive only. Dont connect it to one that is also powering something else. The drive should be configured that way already, but if not, most cases have extra power leads dangling there, or tied back to the case, but not being used. Since you are replacing a drive, you will probably re-use the existing cables, no need to order any extra parts. IBM PC compatible, doesnt have to be made by IBM (i think they got out of the PC business a year or so ago). Going with the internal drive is the way to go. You dont have extra stuff hanging out of the computer. The hardest part for you might be setting the drive to master, or cable select, but it will have pictures, and is probably already set correctly. Your 512mb is ok, but you might want to upgrade to 1GB in the future. When you get the case off, get rid of any dust, and check the fans for dust while you are at it. Just read the instructions that come with the drive, and you should have no problems. I swapped my last drive out in 10 minutes, but i took time to clean the inside of the case, thats why it took so long. Good luck. Sometimes these drives just die, and replacing them is the only way to fix it.
Thanks for the reply Max. I've never installed an internal drive myself, so I'm kinda worry. But since everyone saying it's not that complicated, then I guess I'll be okay. I'll let you guys know how it turn out. Hope it's all good, so I don't have to bother you guys one more time hihi
@andyp95 You're definitely not bothering us!! I think you'll be fine installing it - maxburn also pointed out the master/slave bit - this will all be in the drive's manual. Not to worry! In the mean time til the BenQ comes - have your tried uninstalling the Liteon in device manager then rebooting and letting windows install? May not help but may be worth a shot.
Hi Binkie, Yes, I've tried that also. Same result though, it didn't help. Oh how do I know which is the lastest firmware version available though? I'm ordering a Benq Dw1655 retail box instead of the OEM because I think I'll need the manual guide. Thanks again, have a nice weekend everyone.
Once you get the drive installed check Nero Info Tool for the firmware version - under drive tab there's a field that will display the current firmware #. The latest for this drive is BCDB from 1/24/06 so if your drive was made before this you should update it. Here's a link: http://www.benq-eu.com/ServiceAndSupport/downloads/downloads.cfm?product=839&type=B Have a good weekend too!
Hey folks, I too just started getting an illegal disc error from Nero (and from DVD Shrink). In fact, I just completed burning a dvd disc and went to burn it again to another disc and got the illegal disc error. Since then, every attempt results in this error. I've tried all burning speeds available, with the same result. I've used this same brand of dvds for a year to a year and a half. The disc that worked came out of the same spindle. Any help here would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!!! Here is my latest log... @BoxOfEyes Welcome to aD! Here's what I can see: Your Nero can use an update - update to 6.6.0.18. If you have the full version of Nero here's links for package 1 and package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe Your firmware can use an update - the latest is 2.24 http://support.necsam.com/optical/downloads/flashfirmware/ Roxio can conflict w/ Nero. Uninstall it and run the zapper to remove all traces. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml Good discs - hopefully the firmware up date will take care of the illegal disc error.
@BoxOfEyes - binkie7 beat me to it, bless her; i must be getting slow - not too bad, latest 6.x version is 6.6.0.18 (a lot of us don't count 6.6.1.4 as that's crap and buggy) - i'm assuming your PC is a Dell and the burner came with it, if so your firmware is a little out of date, 203D is here - http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND6500A If it's not a Dell PC then see the other choices at that link.. - sufficient total memory but freee memory leaves much to be desired. you need to ensure sufficient free memory prior to ALL burning - firmware is recognising those discs ok so firmware update can maybe keep for another time - see all other comments - too slow, try 4x or even 8x - CDRALW2K.SYS is part of Roxio. try uninstalling Roxio (doesn't always play well with Nero), then you might need to fully remove using Roxio Zapper - http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

@corleno Welcome to aD! You may need a firmware up date but I'm having a heck of a time finding your drive. The oem may be Liteon. From what I could find looks like this drive should have come with software that you need to install to check for firmware updates. Maybe Creaky or Maxburn can find one. Okay media at best. Try some Verbatim or made in Japan only Fuji, Sony or Maxell. Take it down a notch or 2 to 4x. A Nero update can hurt - see above posts for a decent version of 6.
hi, it would seem to be an OEM of the Lite-on SOHW-1673S however i can't find much on firmware details either...

Binkie, Max I've successfully installed my dvd burner. Thank you so much for all the help within the last 2 weeks. It's not as complicated as I thought it would be. Luckily, it came w/the latest firmware so I don't have to do any updates. THANK YOU!! You guys are the greatest. From now on I don't have to worry about replacing burner again.
@andyp95 Glad to hear you were successful!!! See if I can do it anyone can! Hopefully your burn problems have been solved!
