UNFORTUNATELY, none of the local Walmarts carry this player. I'd have to order it on-line (which would tack on shipping). I may do this eventually. But my 642 is working fine for me so far.

I'M IN Tampa & they carry it,I don't think WalMart charges tax on shipped items. So it would be about the same.Nice thing about WalMart is if it don't work U can take it to a local store for refund. But really not heard about this unit not working, where as the 642 U had a 70/30 chance it would work

I went ahead and got myself one, didn't know at the time it could be made region free. I am very pleased with it, the fact that it's a "cheap" player doesn't change the fact that so far it does everything well....better than my high dollar player.

I can't beleive no one mentioned this!

This player doesn't have OPTICAL Audio output like the 642 did. i think I'm still gonna get it but I have to buy a coaxial cable now.

Sigh....you can never win. Ever.

That's funny because we've talked about it quite a bit.

It didn't bother me that it doesn't have fiber out becuase I use the 5140 in my bedroom and the 642 on my main system.

I have yet found a reason to change, but when I get that one must see movie in DD5.1 I will make the switch, and use the coax out, just be cause I can...

BTW: I am using COAX out on my 642. I have Sony 5 DVD changer I use the optical out on and they both co-exist on the same DVD port on my Sony AV Reciever.

Hi,

The 3040 has a problem with some video files looking "stuttery". It was posted on another board that:

As far as a I know, it is the *combination* of both packed bitstream and 2 consequtive b-frames that cause the problem with mediatek-based chipsets.

Since the 5140 has the same chipset, I'm trying to find out if this problem exists with that player as well, before purchasing one. I've seen the problem first hand on the 3040, but am hoping it is solved with the 5140. Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

I watched a stuttery video last night on my 642. I will try it out on my 5140 and see if it's the same. The point I am trying to make is that if it is stuttery on one player it will be on another. It's not the chipset doing the decoding, it's a bad encode to begin with.

The 642 has ESS chip.

I don't think that is accurate. I have seen a number of files (entire seasons on two different shows come to mind) that are stuttery on the 3040 with the Media-Tek chipset, but ARE NOT stuttery on the 642. Supposedly, the problem is the *combination* of both packed bitstream and 2 consequtive b-frames (I do not know if this is accurate, but it's the only explanation I've seen listed).

So I'm trying to find out if the 5140 has the same problem with stuttery playback on certain files as the 3040 (since they both have the same chipset) or if the problem was fixed in the 5140.

I have never seen a stuttery file on my 642.

All these questions can't be answered unless U know what codecs were used on the video & what video[G-Spot]!I would put most of the blame on the Videos or the burn speed.I only burn at 6x with no problems.I've used the 5140 since 5/25/06 & have had no problems with the Player,it has played everything I D/L.Most of my D/L's are TV series with 12 episodes on ea Disc.Ocassionaly I will get a little audio, video sync problem. But even that is rare, maybe 1 in 100 episodes
If u know the problem is the Video,& it irrates U that much use DrDivx to Re-Do it.However long the VIDEO is how long it takes to redo
Fair WARNING Alway use DVD-RW or DVD+RW to check your Videos first, not all are keepers
By the way my player is on 24/7,even when I sleep

You are missing the point of my post. Obviously, the file is encoded a certain way that is causing the problem -- HOWEVER, the file plays fine on the 642, it STUTTERS in the video on the 3040, which has the SAME CHIPSET as the 5140. It has been stated that the Mediatek chipset has a problem playing files encoded a certain way -- they end up looking stuttery. I have seen this first-hand. These files DO NOT look stuttery on the 642. I need to find out if these files look stuttery on the 5140 before I buy the player, or if the 5140 does not have the same problem as the 3040 of playing these files encoded that way.

Can't think of any other way to explain it. Please refrain from further posts about how to re-encode -- that's NOT what I'm looking to do. I'm looking to find out if the 5140 plays those files the same way as the 3040 (which the 642 does not) -- stuttery-looking. Thanks.

@bcounty: Is there somewhere you could upload a sample of that file that stutterz? That way some peeps with the 5140 can try it out and let you know... Just my 2˘. :-)

ruFFritch -- Hmmm... that's a good idea. But I'm not sure. I may be able to upload part of it somewhere, but how do I get just a part of it? Thanks!

(And does anyone have a public/anonymous place I could upload part of it to?)

You'd need an app like AVIsplitter http://www.brizsoft.com/avisplit/ or similar. You want an app that splits, but does not re-compress or re-encode while doing it. Look! Here's another one called... you guessed it AVI splitter! LOL!! http://www.008soft.com/products/avi-splitter.htm
Sorry, can't help you out with webspace or FTP. Good luck!! :-D

I love the 642, and the 5140 seems all around better. One thing I'm curious about though.... when watching DivX with hardcoded subs (such as anime) do the subs still get cut off on the bottom like they do with the 642?

I have not seen subs get cut off either the 642 or the 5140.

It might be your TV.

I've noticed on three differnt tvs, but only on some anime fansubs with hardcoded subs. Bleach and Naruto come to mind as examples.

I agree with you dcmorrow.... 5% overscan is considered (by some) to be acceptable for television... Truth is that many consumer (TV) manufacturers overscan 10-20% (some even more!) of the picture. If the subs are too close to the bottom of the screen, then they would certainly be cut off in many "out of the box" consumer sets.

hey guys, I've been reading all 3 pages of this thread and my question hasn't been answered...so I created an account to ask it.

I recently got this DVD player and it seems to be really great, mainly because the reason I'll use it is I have a bunch of DivX movies to burn and watch on the big screen instead of my monitor.

Anyway, I've been burning the movies (in DivX code) to CD-R's using the DivX Player app., which allows you to drag and drop the movies and burn them. Now, I'm able to watch the movies, but sometimes it'll skip or freeze for a while, and most recently I've been getting to this part on a certain movie where it'll go back to the beginning, it's starting to bother me. (Mind you these are brand new CD-R's and the original AVI files aren't corrupt)

What I'm thinking it may be is the burning speed, which I have a 54x burner, but unfortunately, DivX Player wont let me choose at what speed to burn, so I'm guessing it's burning way too fast, I'd rather it burn at the slowest, 8x most likely. So what I did next was try burning it in Nero, since I can choose the speed there, and I'm burning it as a Data CD (ISO1). Well, 4 cd's later and none of them are read, the dvd says Loading and after a while it'll just say Stop and wont load.

Can anyone tell me in what mode am I supposed to be burning at? Or any other burning method I can use?

Poofy5..It mostly sounds like U got media problems ! Or U never said what kind & model # DivX Player U got..I use DVD RW's,that way I can put 4 movies on 1 Disc.Watch them then decide if they are keepers. If I really enjoyed the movie then I wait for the DVD which is a lot better. Also with DVD RW's I can add 12 episodes of most TV Series. These I Keep, but I always use RW's to make sure all is OK..HATE just hate wasting a Disc on a movie that has something wrong..Jusr cause U got new Cd's don't mean they are good !!What kind did U by anyway..The best are TY's & I think Ritek..Again!!Me I like a Printable Disc, that way you've got a nice labeled Product

wow rick...thanks for telling me what U like, I have more info on that than the answer I was looking for...thanks! *sarcasm*

Again...the question is, what is the best way to burn DivX files into CD-R's to watch on the Philips dvp5140?

the cd's aren't an issue, they're just...CD'S!! All this talk on what cd's are better and all that crap, we've gone through this in the 90's, I really doubt that with the technological advances we've had the last couple of years cd's are still an issue. If you really wanna know, they're just regular Fujifilm 80Min 700MB discs, great bargain!

Poofy5..Every thing in your last statement is totaly wrong !
OH YA!!The best way to burn Cd's is with a Cd,DVD Burner.I've got a 5140,an Avayon DXP1000,a 642,and a US Logic.I don't seem to have any of the issues that U have.So I'm guessing that what U stated is totaly correct.Sorry U could'nt grasp what I was saying, sometimes i even get way over my own head with those long technical explanations

Guys,

Maybe using Nero UDF or ISO will help better.

That's what I use without any problems.

Hi guys,

NEED HELP fast. few days ago I bought a Philips DVP5960 and tried out to play some of my AVI files. I played my Chinese movie with an SRT Subtitle (name on AVI and SRT are identical ... but lengthy) ... it played OK at first and then it froze one of the "Subtitles" 15 minutes into the movie and no more what I did the darn thing would not play subtitles passed that point.

I tried the same dvd in my PC and played back using Window Media Player (and I have DirectVobSub loaded) ... it played through beautifully.

I took the unit back and asked for another one .... I tried playing back the same Chinese movie and AGAIN the darn thing did the exact same problem.

Q1: WHAT I SMY PROBLEM?
Q2: Can I fix the Player or my File?
Q3: would I experience same problem with Philips DVP5140?

I also have another problem ... AVI's freezing at certain point and not playing at all with DVP5960.

Q4: Is this problem unique to my 5960?

Thanks,
G!

Poofy5 Im no expert but use to have the same problem as you a few years back, where newly burnt DivX files were jumping and sometimes I had sinc problems. At the time I was blaming my media, then I started blaming the burner, but found when I finally got down to reducing the speed of my burn all my problems disapeared. You say that your DivX Player burns at 54x only, you should use software like Nero as you can choose your burn speed and I always pick the lowest speed, yes it takes longer to burn but not like Im in a hurry, and for last 3 years I havent had a single problem with Divx's and I have 500+ Divx's.

Hope this is the answer you were looking for.
