Hi
What about some info back first, it is free, have you got any further than your 18th Jan post which says only half your drive formatting??? If so how did you do it??? and what about some info back for others in this thread with the same problem ????

wow, I would love to provide info but I'm still a newbie and still learning. I even tried to PM you once with a Q but got no reply, even to say that you couldnt help.

Anyway, The HD formatting issue did not resolve itself but seemed to record fine anyway, so although it only showed 48% formatted, it seems to have completed. Though I have only used 95% of the disk, so yet to see.

Back to my Q, Do you know the changes the new firmware provides or are you just going to withhold this info until I can provide some advice of my own? must be great having the power.. good for you.

Hi
No, I don't have the power , just read, learn and digest a lot on this and other forums, all the info is out there but needs finding if you want it. I don't really like PM's and I would rather answer someone on the forum so others can read, learn and gain from it, thats how its supposed to work. PM's should only be needed and used on forums that don't like mentioning certain subjects and often threaten to ban you if you do mention them. The only advantage with the new firmware is a slightly improved EPG speed, but still far from perfect.

Ok, I'll download it so.

One other question. The TV/Radio button on my PVR doesnt work until I go Menu/Channel edit/Radio Channel and then exit. The I get all the radio channels. I can then rotate between TV and Radio no problems using this TV/Radio button but if I turn the unit off at the mains and back on, then the TV/Radio button doesnt work again until I do the above. Have you had this issue?

Hi
TV/Radio button on my remote is ok on vers 4.506, so maybe thats another bit of improvement in the new version.

Hi
Yes they auto update fine, and am over the moon with mine, it really is a simple to 'set and forget' machine although some people have a good moan about them. The main moan problem people have which they don't realise the importance off is with '''signal strength'''or lack of, old cable, long runs, too many splitters, STB's in the bedroom, upstairs, downstairs etc, which means they don't get all channels when scanning and don't record all channels that have been pre set to record.

I have a few issues/weakness's with the PVR.

- EPG only goes a few hours ahead. Difficult to set to record without it. One of the main reasons/advantages for a PVR device.
- EPG can be quite slow and does not have all the info for your channel most of the time.
- the 'last' (or back button) button has a life of it's own and hardly ever goes back the the last channel but to a channel before the last one.
- TV/Music button does not work for me but I hear it works for others.
- The EPG does not have a remind button, so it can't remind you of a programme that you may have wished to watch.
- The channel editor sort option is very laborious to move channels around in your favorites.

I hope the developers come up with improved firmware to address the EPG/GUI issues.

Hi again
You do have some moans, I'm glad I did't write the software for these STB's.
Did you upload the latest version 4.506 Oct2007 ??
In 4.506 Oct 2007 My tv/radio button changes over fine and there is a ''Reminder'' to Record / Watch option in the EPG/PreRecord menu. By pressing EPG then the Yellow button gives me a full evening of Progs, but you sometimes have to wait a while for EPG to catch up if your machine has just been switched on. 4.506 is in the Starview_PVR/Firmware folder, along with ''How too load it'' in the Documents folder. link below.

Yeah I have that version from Oct 2007. Hopefully the next version will improve the EPG.

Thanks for the note on the 'reminder' function. great to have.

Hi
Many people have problems with these usb laptop adaptors, either try on a PC with a com port or use a usb to usb lead and load software in that way, Click on link and look in Starview_pvr/Documents folder Usb and Com port load methods in there and software in there.
BTW, Why do you need to Update the S/W ?, Has your PVR never worked?

Hi
Strange to have no S/W loaded, have you asked the seller how to set it up or did they give instructions?
Anyway as I said goto that link and D/load the latest software for the PVR (v4.506 Oct2007) and the loader and the Docs how to do it. You are going to have to try it on a PC with a 9Pin Com port as you will not be able to use the USB to USB method unless the PVR has started which will only then give you usb communication. (You can try it if you have the usb/usb lead)

Hi
No, you don't need a H/D installed to install the software and you can use any IDE type drive, but it looks like there is a problem with your box, seems to be a non runner, question him about, did he find it?, buy it? was he given it? did it ever work? you could be wasting all our time we could be here for weeks trying to run it if its a duff box. If you've read all and have done all I directed you too, it must be a doorstop.
One final suggestion to make sure of and !!!VERY IMPORTANT!!!! make sure you have a 'Null Modem Cable' Nothing else will ever transfer the data for you so if its not right your wasting your time as you will also be if you are using a laptop with a USB converter.
Google for Null Modem Cable and check the holes in both female ends of your cable, borrow a meter to check these 3 lines end to end. hole for Pin 3 to Pin 2, hole for Pin 2 to Pin 3, hole for Pin 5 to Pin 5. Only three wires.

Hi
Here you are I found it elsewhere, try it

So to recap.
I Plug the RS232 (null modem lead lead in) (the one I always use ok)
Plug the box into the mains and turn it on. It displays ON for 12 secs before going to Init,

I Run PVR Loader (whilst it still shows on and before it goes into Init)
I load "BoxPVR_E_v4506_15Oct.bin"
press download and get
"flash update fail"

EDIT:
Success at last (but only by using ok, exit 3 times (WITH THE REMOTE) to get it to hold the -31 for the flash to take.
It finally worked after umteen key presses on remote control I finally got it to hold on -31 long enough so I could update it.

Hi
What had you been doing wrong then?
Try another hard drive after you have made sure its connected ok inside and its set to Master. Try the ribbon cable connected differently (at board end) inside as it may have got disconnected at the board end previously and put back wrong. It may have a pin 1 marking on the board. But pin 1 (red line) goes next to power plug on the H/D.

Hi
There will be 8 or 9 extra pins at one end of your H/D next to your ribbon cable pins, you will need to remove the H/D to do this. On the pins there should be one or two jumpers (plastic bridging pieces) these need to be on the correct pins to set your H/D to Master, there will be a drawing of the pin settings on your H/D's face somewhere. If not google for your H/D Make & model to find the pin drawing connections, then set it to master. If it still don't work get another H/D. The H/D will need formating in the Menu system when its recognised.
