Sony DVD DL500SL drive...

I work for Sony's technical development department and wish to remain anonymous. I can tell you that we are working on a DVD drive that will not only burn to Dual Layer DVD discs, but will allow you to turn on and off hardware compression. Of course you will not be able to read compressed disc in standard drives. This is for backup and archival purposes. Note that you will be able to play back audio and video on compressed disc in this drive. So it would be possible to copy DVD9 movie in its intierity, but only playable in this drive.

This drive will be able to burn to all previous writable formats with the respectable speeds. CD-R (100x), CD-RW (72x), DVD-R and DVD+R (12x), DVD-RW and DVD+RW (10x). Read speeds are upwards of 300 to 400x. This achieved be rotating the laser assembly instead of the disc. Disc as you may already know intend to vibrate at higher speeds and therefore are more difficult to read. The motor assembly is unique in design that prevents axis stress. I am not part of the development of this motor assembly and can not give any more details that I know.

This drive should be ready late 2004 to early 2005. We have perfected the CD-R components to maintain these speeds, but are still working on the DVD side of the drive. This may prolong the release.

Get ready for 2007 when we will release the “hYPER drive”. Basically it is the same drive but with about 7x the performance on all writting and reading speeds stated above. This is achieved by using multiple lasers assembled in an array. Seven to be exact. This drive may include an Ultra 333ATA IDE bus. Yes that is three 3s, not a typo.

 

Please test your Sony drive to see if it can backup Safedisc 2.8.x (The Sims Unleashed) and SecuROM 4.8.x (Unreal Tournament 2003). Use BlindWrite Suite 4.25 to make a backup of SecuROM 4.8.x and Alcohol 120% to make a backup of Safedisc 2.8.x. If this drive does this with success, then I'll consider buying.
Please post the drives dvd rip speeds, dae speeds, dae accuracy, data rip speeds as well.
I wan't the "all in one" best dvd burner out there that can not only backup dvd's, but cd and audio protection. Can the drive backup audio cd protection like Key2Audio, Cactus Data Shield?

We are considering on dropping the non-hYPER drive unit. Due to addition assembly line requirements, it is in our best interest to produce the hYPER drive unit only.

Due to the nature of the hYPER Drive, there are no minimum drives speeds. The speed that I mentioned is a constant speed across the entire diameter of the disc. Both for reading and writing. All though the data through put can be affected by source drive speeds and over all system performance. The hYPER drive assembly will still spin at the speeds that I mentioned. Basically the faster your system is the better performance you will achieve.

We are working with several drive motors. The motor that will read a 300x is a much better quality unit than the motor that can read at 400x. Remember to multiply this by 7. If using the 300x motor, this will bring the constant read speed to 2100x and writing speed to CD-R (700x), CD-RW (504x), DVD-R and DVD+R (84x), DVD-RW and DVD+RW (70x).

The current Digital audio extraction quality is 10. As for backing up protected disc, the drive can read and write in RAW-Mode for both CDs and DVDs.

As for software, I can not say what product we will use with the final product. We are currently working with a new breed of software. I can not tell you the manufacture of this program, but I can tell you this. It is far beyond anything currently out there. In comparison it would be the deference from a basic calcular to super computer. BlindWrite and Alcohol I do know are on the list for testing as we wnat to mantain compatability.

 

Thanks for your speedy response nilesf People who backup cd& audio protection really aren't concerned how fast they can back the protection(s), they just wan't a drive that can achieve this without emulation. I backup dvd2svcd and I have to burn at slow speeds (8x) simply because many dvd-roms and home dvd players can't quite handle movies burned to cd-r's at high speeds. As far as dvd-r's, i can't comment too much because I don't own one at the moment, but I have tested on my nephews dvd burner. I backed up a dvd movie burning at 1x and the video quality is amazing! When Sony launches this dvd burner, I can assure you that if the dvd burner can correct efm encoding and backup pc& audio cd protection, Sony will will have a "prize" on their hands and many people will buy this product simply because the drive can backup pc& audio cd protection. DVD rip speeds will be a big impact as well. My LiteON LTD 165H drive rips about 11-12x, audio about 23-24x.

Not a problem... Since this is my baby, I am here in hopes to promote this product prior to its release. Word of mouth. I can tell you this much, the drive can read some crazy formats. For example, a scratched CD that would normally not be readable in a standard drive can be read successfully in the hYPER drive. This is due the laser pick array and its ability to focus in and out for the dual layer DVD portion. This focusing is used on the CD side of the drive as well. I guess you could say that this drive is adaptive in a sense.

I failed to mention that if you have two of these drive you can do a hard-copy. This means that no software is involved in the burning process, except for the monitor of their progress. There will be an OBB (One Button Burn) button on the front of the drive. The next best thing would be to have your own dye stamping machine. Actually this hYPER drive would be the best thing. I can assure you this drive will read anything past, current and future.

And if you can physically craw into this drive you to can be copied as well. Shoey what kind of dumb ass name is that? What are you retarded and can not pronounce your own name Hughie.
