If your just starting off, I would suggest DVD Shrink to start with. It can be downloaded here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm

    and there's a guide here:
    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shrink.cfm

I would start with that, and read up on as much info as you can find on the site...

Good luck and Welcome to aD!

EDIT: One more piece of advice, Don't use crap media like Memorex! Use something good like Verbaitum, Sony. And keep your burn speeds low, if you burn to high you're movie will skip and freeze.

Ripping is taking the files off of the DVD and putting it on the harddrive of your computer so that you can take them from the computer and burn them to a blank DVD disc.

There are guides in my signature block that will assist you.

    Cheers and read read read.

There is tons of information at this sight.

Nero can rip/encode and burn, but it cannot do encrypted data. It will not do a protected disk, you need programs to break the protection. You must use a third party program to do this, such as DVDFab Decrypter or DVD Decrypter which will break the protection and rip it to your hard disk drive and you can then encode it with Nero Recode and burn. You can also use a driver program which is free DVD43 which will run in the background and break the encryption and then Nero will see the disk as unprotected and rip/encode/burn. You also can dl another drive based program AnyDVD which has a 21 day free trial and works the same way. Your best bet is to read the guides and try the free programs all of which are available from this site, alone with guides and see how the process is done.

The best two to start with are DVDFab Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

If your files are DVD Compliant, meaning they contain a correct Video structure you can use Nero to burn as long as the file is below 4.3g in size otherwise you need to use Nero Recode to size it to fit a DVD5 disk. If your files are in another format you will need to convert. Nero Vision Express will convert avi to video files and burn. There is a basic guide for how to do this using NVE in the link I gave.
