your system is fine as long as your not using divx or other "lossy" compresion when you convert to avi but if you started with an mpeg or vob programs such as videoredo will allow you to do a lot of editing whilst still keeping your file as an dvd compliant mpeg saving alot of time in file conversion
as for your sound its really your choice as to format AC3,MP2,PCM as long as your happy with the output

does the quality of conversion(from avi to mpeg 2) depend on the software that i use to do this.
does the quality of ac3 is worst than the mp3 quality?
when i convert from avi to mpg4 and then to avi again can i obtain some of the lost quality again?

    thanks for your previous reply!!

every conversion will cause a small amount of quality loss in particular the conversion of mpeg to avi if you use compression like divx or xvid try using uncompressed or huffyuv (its lossless) the coversion from avi to mpeg depends more I think on your settings as much as the software I use Tmpegenc to convert and are happy with the results personly I prefer mp2 or Pcm sound om my dvd mp3's which are present on many xvids and need to be converted to mp2 ac3 or pcm for dvd use
