Impossible Lead-Out Failure

    I have no idea what could be wrong. DMA is enabled. I'm using an external DVDRW burner using a USB 2.0 port. I cleaned out all the Roxio stuff (I think).

    You're using CMC media: this forum is full with threads on all the problems that these DVD create.
    Some of the messages seem weird:
    This would suggest the DVD can't be burned but then the burning actually starts. Don't know why.

    Before getting new DVD, you may want to try som eof th efollowing though:
    1) Reduce the image size: 4390MB may be too close to the disk edge. Try 4300MB (you can set this limit if DVDshrink or Nero Recode)
    2) Try a slower speed: 16X may bee too much for your PC

    More clues to solve the mystery:

    I tried burning a Data CD on my external I\O Magic USB 2.0 DVDRW drive using Nero and it failed after a couple of seconds.

    I then used Nero to burn a Data CD with the same data using my computer's internal CD writer. The process went perfectly, no problem.

    This leads me to think that problem is located in the DVD burner. It could also be a problem with the USB 2.0 port I installed just today.

    There are several "Device not available" warnings in the logfile.
    There could be several causes so, maybe you can answer some questions:
    1) Did you ever burn anything on that drive?
    2) Can/did you use that drive to read a DVD?
    3) If you check your device manager, do you get any warnings?

    Also, it seem that the burner is identified as "DVDRW USB 16X" what brand and model is, exactly, your DVD burner?

    you may need to uninstall the drivers on it.. restart the machine.. and let the machine do the
    re-installation its own..

    just did that to my gf's machine.. works better now

    edit: just realized. you are using the same drive she's got... that drive doesnt like verbs.. try
    some ty 's... i know it does like ricohs.. havent tested the ty's on this.. but will sure do and
    keep you posted.

    I'm using a Memorex. Not sure what the driver in question is: from the log I can only see "DVDRW USB 16X", unless I am going blind ... ;p

    I do have a USB drive, but mine shows as Memorex yadayada in the logfile.

    I'm thinking this is either
    a) a burner issue (so if we find out that it never worked before ...). Could be firmware, but we need the model first.
    b) a driver issue. I had some difficulties on my older laptop with the USB ports. I got it fixed just by luck, when I installed ActiveSync (ActiveSync has new USB drivers)
    c) a media issue: I had so much troubles with CMC I'm not surprised of anything, but the type of errors that Nero shows seem more device-related. If this drive ever burned a DVD before, then it could very well be the CMCs, but if it was never used I doubt we could pin also this on CMC

    its a process of elimination.. even if everything is fixed and working properly and u're using cmc.. chances are.. it may still screw up

    try some better media..
    and that drive.. i have found to be a pain.. i have burned a few dvds on it.

    To complete a successful burn you need at least 512meg RAM, I would suggest investing in another 256meg. Burning chews up a lot of RAM and you are sailing too close to the edge.

    Get rid of the Memorex.
