Why wont half life work on my win xp comp

it used to work on my other comp with i think win 98 or 2000 not sure...

is there a patch or something needed for being able to play half-life on my comp

the error message says please insert the cd
I inserted on every drive possible, I even used virtual drives but before I started to open the game on the installation it said that there is a known problem with the win xp operating system so someone please help me....

Id try setting it to compatibility mode for windows 98. And do you have all the updates?

Yeah i didnt think about that the Steam Forums would be a good place to look. And assuming you own the game and just want to play off a backup you'll need certain files which are easily found on the web. The ones usually needed are no=cd/no-dvd executables. these will get rid of the error please insert correct cd/dvd etc..

I don't need a crack cuz I did an image of my game or if that does not work, I can use my original till I get a crack (are cracks legal even on limewire)
