Hey guys, i've been really stressing over my 2 maxtor hdd's. For some reason, everytime i boot the hdd's up, it will load past the Windows logo and then right before it loads the accounts, i hear a clicking sound from both, yes both, hdd's and the comp. restarts. I use to have similar problems long ago, but a simple shift of the hhd molex power connector and it booted fine, however, i tried that, along with many other solutions ( such as switching ide cables, using diff. jumper pins) but nothing has worked. In fact, this is the only it has been this bad and this much of a pain in the arss. Couple hours before this happened, i was formatting my computer b/c of the new ati drivers i downloaded for my 9800XT, where the blue screen of death would pop up and say that there was a faulty driver installation or something. At this moment, im stumped as what to do next, im guessing that my hdds are dieing on me. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice on what i should do next.

    Take care,

disconect your second drive and try to boot from the drive that has windows on it
try safe mode as well press F8 just before the win logo appears at the end of post

If the hard drives are clicking then yeah done for. They are junk. Maxctor are notoriously shitty drives. D/l their utility and it will tell yeah for sure if they are failin. It can be run off a floppy in dos mode or the ultimate boot cd has the utility contained

Buty usually the click of death means they are f**cked. Its the drive trying to readjust the head, but it cant.

Wow, that was soo weird and very fortunate!! I decided to go for another format, and lucky as i am, it went into windows setup, formatted successfully, and now im running the computer flawelessy! No clicking whatsoever!! Wheww, what a close call! But, i'll definately download the utility to check out the condition of my drives. Thanks alot for the replies and advices!! Really appreciate it!!!

    Take care guys,
