one more thing you need also:

A filter with a floating ground. *very cheap at radioshack

If you don't use this, you will get a low level hummm out of your stereo speakers playing thru your PC.

Actually, radioshack makes one with everything you need. All the right plugs and filter built into one. Designed to do what your wanting it for.

How about using a svideo cable? Would that work?
I'd like to do the same thing as the original poster using svideo (my laptop has it) but since I can't directly connect it to my stereo system , would it work if I connect my laptop and the DVD player with svideo, and DVD player and stereo system with a regular yellow/white/red cable? (I have no idea what I'm doing... just pulling this idea out of my arse heh)
Is there any other way to connect a computer and a stereo system besides the way SypherTek suggested?
    Thanks in advance.

well, the "S video" connection only sends out your video data, no audio. So you still would need to connect your audio output from your computer to your stereo or TV.

The S video sends out better picture quality and takes the place of your yellow RCA plug only. You still need to connect the white (left channel) and red (right channel) audio.

Hope this answers your question. If not, let me know.

Thanks, ugc. lol I should've known that svideo was only for video, heh. I think for my case it's best to get a S-Video/Composite Audio cable from Circuit city. Thanks again!
    [EDIT]
Duh my laptop doesn't have red/white audio out. looks like I'll have to get the one sypher suggested.

I tried to help you out a little futher by searching radio shack's site to give you a link to what you need. But I couldn't find it on their site. (Their search feature is not the best, or it isn't listed).

You still should not have any problems. Any local electronics store could give you what is needed. Just tell them what you are doing, and they could hook you up. Just don't forget about that filter. I had my pc to stereo connected together with regular cables and listen to a small hum for years. I figured it was cheap cables that was the cause, so I went to radio shack to upgrade (hoping that was the problem), and the person told me about that filter, so I bought it, and he was right. Now, listing to music thru pc is just like playing a CD.

    Good luck with your project.

One thing I noticed right away was that I have to turn the volume up fairly high - all the way up on my laptop and 40% on stereo system - to barely feel the bass and whatnot... I guess that's one of *many* disadvantages of mini jack. I'm not complaining, though, as I'm finally fully utilizing my 400 dollar stereo system that's been collecting dusts in the corner of my room. BTW, I'm not getting any hum sound... yet. Thanks everyone!

Check your speaker volume in control pannel. Also check your advanced audio controls and make sure your wave balance is turned up full. And you can also (All my Pcs anyways) adjust the bass levels in your windows audio settings.

The mini jack shouldnt degrade the quality or lower the volume.
