mpeg no audio?

Hi,
I have an avi that when I convert to mpeg for vcd with tmpge the picture is fine but there's no sound. If I try to use virtualdub to strip the audio to wav then convert the audio is out of sync.
When I open it in virtualdub I get this...Vdub has detected and improper VBR audio recording in source avi...may introduce skew etcetc.
The file itself says something about SBC-VBRmp3. I'm new to this, can anyone give me advice on what I need to do? TIA
