Ok, here is the situation. I have a DVD Burner that does dual layer. The model number is HL-DT-ST GSA 4163B . When I copy a DVD in any method or program using a dual layer disk it comes out great and plays just fine on my Onkyo DVD player. Especially when I'm using ISO mode instead of file mode.

Here is the wierd part. Anytime I try to burn a movie with a 4.7 DVD+R disk it can't be played. For awhile I thought it was my Onkyo DVD player just not liking them. But my nieghbor burns to DVD+R's and they play just fine on my Onkyo..meaning...I'm thinking its my burner. No matter what method or what program I use, can't make a successful burn to a DVD+R with this drive.

Do I need a firmware upgrade?? If I do..where do I get it at? Or maybe I need a better model DVD burner. Can anyone suggest a really good burner that does dual layer? Or anything else that you could shed light on this problem.

Looks like your drive supports booktyping - here's good guide about it and how to booktype in decrypter and nero:
    http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

The other reason your dvd5 discs may not be playing is the media your using, firmware on your drive may not be up to date and your burn speed. Players can be picky w/ media. Your neighbor may be using better media, firmware up to date, burn speed etc.
When you say you can't make a successful backup on a +r is that only because of your dvd player? Do they playback in the pc?

No, they wont play back on PC either. And like I said its only the 4.7's. I'm using very good media. And I have the latest firmware update. The only other thing is I usually burn em at 8X, is this a problem?

My drive doesn't seem to support booktyping, I tried....

Here is an update. I went out and bought some DVD-R's just to see if there would be a difference. I used my tried and true dual layer method of decrypting and burning. I start out with DVDFab for decrypting. And then I use shrinker for these DVD-R's to shrink it to a ISO file and then I burn with DVD decrypter. And low and behold it works...on every DVD player in the house. The DVD-R's work great. DVD+R's never did, unless they are Dual Layer. Well I found something that works. I guess since everyone has different hardware and software no one size fits all....you have to experiment and thats what I've been doing and found something that works for my setup. Thanx for all the help.
